What's wrong with my Naso?

So I built up my tank very slow as I didnt want get into the multiple tank syndrome. May have been a poor plan.

What the hell is going on with my Naso?


He's been here right at a month, tiny on arrival he's not quite double, fat, eating well. Yesterday I noticed what I thought might be a problem on him snout, today it looks like a hole.

Is he already dead? I mean before I could get him out I'd need a tank, heater and some kind of filtration. The pic from yesterday to today makes it look like his whole head will be gone by morning.

This sucks.

Bio-load is low to medium. Nitrates, Nitrites, Ammonia are 0, PH is 7.98, Alk is 15.3.

Neat story about Alk...I tested and tested and kept coming up at 0. Thinking this might play a role in my struggle to increase PH, I studied up on raising Alk with baking soda; was patient, talked to people, read and read and read, had the local LFS test my water and confirm my findings (he was a dumb as me). I raised Alk to 8.0 (or so I thought) and then learned I was misreading the Alk test kit. I went to over 20 on Alk. 90+ gallons worth of water change over two weeks and I'm now back to a measurable Alk setting. All of this is the only stress the tank has been through of late.

The wife is going to get some brocholli tonight and we'll try clipping that for the guys to try.

I've been putting algae in (soaked in garlic) and the naso, bicolor and kole all seem to enjoy it.

This is something I really didnt want to learn about. We've rocked along for 8 months with all sorts of minor ordeals....this just sucks. I guess reading about ich and HLLE is in my immediate future.
