What the heck is this? (Mejano anemones)

Does anyone know what the heck this is? I will probably go up to fish2morrow and ask Robert or Helen in the next couple of days but wondering if anyone could view the picture an tell me what I have in my tank.

Thanks in advance.

I agree with Matt,.

The LFS by my house just aquired about 200 lbs of rock covered in these, i have one in my tank as well that i have been thinkin about dosing.

Thanks Matt and Catphish...I was hoping it wasn't that...
Well now I need to figure out my plan of attack...I just bought my tank an the entire tank was covered...The guy I brought the tank from said that he saw it and thought they were kewl until they took over the tank...

Try a Threadfin Butterfly (juvenile, 2 - 3" range) - I've had decent sucess with them clearing them out.

I added a Klein's to my 100 G to get rid of some aiptasia - s/he ate a majano too, but I only saw one in the tank so don't know if it would take on a tank full.

I have some Joes Juice but this stuff has taken over my tank..and again...
I bought the tank this way..Here is a picture of what I am talking about...
By no means am I a photographer or neither is my son..

Me next to my tank full of Mejano anemones

Thanks...
You can blame Robert and Helen at Fish2morrow...
I bought my first couple of 8 gallon Biocubes from them and it was
down hill from there...

Muhahahaa another addict to the club. Your tank looks good and dont worry im sure you find your plan of action also a cool thing to watch .

Andre - be careful killing them if they are in your tank. killing them will only make them spread further. I have never had mejanos but have seen them many times and the end result is always the same - if you kill them in your tank they will always multiply. Pull the rock out and use a blow torch.

Gkarsens on MAAST used Joe's Juice and it made the mejano's worse. It did kill what it touched but the mejano's got even more out of control.

The only time this happens is when you "injure" them, that's when they divide rapidly in an attempt to survive. When you "juice em" put enough in so that thay literally start dissolving and falling off the rock ....just watch your ph when you do this. I personally find injecting them works better than feeding them the "poison".

Cheers,

I think once I get my nitrates under control I will try a Threadfin Butterfly (juvenile, 2 - 3" range)....until that time I have some Joes Juice and I don't think this coudl get any worse...those things are everywhere

Welcome to the hobby, too bad you got off on a bad foot with the anemones, some people take out their live rock and "cook" for a while, that's the only way I think you can completely get rid of them, the fish will only control their population.

Anton is right. The only real way is taking the rock out of the tank and it needs to be done quick before they multiply. They multiply blazingly fast.

What about if I take each rock out and scrub the rock vs cook the rock? I have a couple of rocks that have a lot of neon green polpys that I would like to keep an I will probably try to use Joes Juice on...

i just go the cheap route to kill them. has worked great for me. i use a large syringe with about one foot of airline tubing on it. Suck up some very hot reverse osmosis water and direct it toward them and boil the crap out of them. works well for me in the tank or out.

Those are actually Rock Anemone's,

I kill them in my tank with a syringe I got at CVS (Insulin syringe, $5 for a pack of 12)

and I use a little bit of white vinegar.

I use the syringe to inject a little bit of vinegar into thier stalks, or right into their mouth. Its easier to go into the stalk behind the disc though.
Sometimes after a few minutes after injection you can go back with the syringe and insert it into their stalks again and they will fall off the rock and you can scoop them out of the tank.

I had 100's of these, and now only have 2 or 3 a few weeks later.

White vinegar is exactly the same as joes juice except that it is an acid instead of a base. Don't use more than 100 cc's per 100 gallons, but if you must use more just do a water change a few days after you inject the anenomes to remove the excess vinegar/dead/dying anemone messes.

ALWAYS run carbon when killing nem's as they release toxins after they die. Same when fragging mushrooms.
