1) I am getting into Corals down the road after my tank has cycled, what sort
of lighting will I need, supposing I want to grow all kinds of Coral.

I have a 48' Fixture right now with 2x55W Fluourecent bulbs.

2) Do I need to have Quarantine tank, can I get by this or is it better to set 1
up.

QTs pay for themselves many times over by preventing sick fish! I agree with Matt. MHs are best and you'll never have to upgrade!

Yes i would also go with a MH VHO/T5 combo, like two 250W MH's with 2 VHO super actinic supliments giving you some where around 700 Watts of lighting...That would give you around 6.5/watt gallon, or you could go with the 175watt MH's if your tank is long. I"m assuming your tank is 48"x 24"x 22" since you have at 48 Inch long light right now.

You could possibly find a good deal on one in the for sale forum. To me, I have always purchased the best light and skimmer that I can and then let everything grow into them. If you buy a light for your immediate needs, you will wish you had gotten the bigger one later on, when you see some coral you want....and the person ask you..."what kind of lights do you have".

As far as the Quarantine tank goes, I wouldn't waste my money on one at this point in time. I have never used one, and try to concentrate on only buying healthy specimens and ultimately keeping a very healthy reef. Since there is no way to always buy healthy corals and fish, you can contrate on keeping a very stable envirnment where your specimans can flourish.

Good Luck.

Here's my 2 cents.

Since your still in the cycle mode you can get by without the QT tank until you finally make up your mind which coral you want to keep. Then you can make your decision on the fish you would like to introduce to your display.

A QT tank is important to make sure you don't introduce any sick fish and kill everything you have worked so hard to build. Remember a QT tank isn't only for fish you can use it for corals . There are always hitchhickers in corals.

The last thing you want is to come home one day and have $1000.00 worth of rock and water only to look at.

Good Luck !!!!!

I would have to agree with Matt. You can set up an inexpensive QT that would surely have you $ in the long run. It can be difficult to always buy "just healthy" specimens especially when you are a newbie. This goes for fish or corals. The choice of a QT is always the hobbiests' to make.
