WHAT SIZE RETURN PUMP

I have a 75gal with a hangonback overflow (with a 1" pipe feeding the refugium). What size pump should I get for the return? I guess a mag 9.5 is overkill, huh? I am kinda thinking a mag 5 or mag 7. Gimme some ideas.

Without knowing the size of your sump, to be safe I would recommend a mag 5 or equivalent. In my opinion having a large return pump is overkill and often causes problems especially with hang on overflows. Your water flow is better served coming from either a closed loop or power-heads (I use Koralie power-heads).

Mag 5 or 7 if like a little extra turnover..... but I would consider a different pump than the mags... they have restart and heat problems... look at a quiet one or eheim instead. They run a bit more (depending on the model) but are more reliable and heat free.

How big is your drain? Drain size will help determine the size of the pump needed. How high will you be pumping this water? ie: How high from sump to return nozzle back into display? I would go on a limb and guess a Mag5 would be sufficient but more information is needed to be sure. said:
when you say drain size, I guess you are referring to the 1" pvc pipe that goes from the bottom of the overflow and down into my refugium. The refugium is a 35gal tank that has been converted, so I'd say there will be about 25gallons in it.

i had a mag 7 on my 40g with no problems , if the pump is too big u will prob get microbubbles.

Mags have always been good for me never had any problems i have 6 of them, as far as any heat any pump puts off that would only mater if it wasnt running 24/7
