What kind of wrasse is this?

New fish added to quarantine tank today - Copperband Butterfly and a little green wrasse of some sort. Any idea on wrasse, chime in.

I just started my second job at one of the fish stores here in Denton (Fishman) and my first day (Friday) we got a shipment in and we got a wrasse that looks alot like the one you pictured. Our order labeled it as a "green leaf wrasse" but noone there had seen one before, we were all taken aback by it, he was so unique. Please try and get some more pictures of yours and post anything you find out on him.

I saw one at the LFS today..in fact, sure was thinking of pulling the trigger, real pretty, but the worker said they get to a foot long :shock:

Heres a post from a thread I saw about them;
"This one, if I know what he's talking about, is a really beautiful light green all over and if I remember was relatively long, thin and flat. I quite liked it but was tough to keep."

Hit the search up top with google and type "green leaf wrasse" with the quotation marks...you'll get some reading materiel.

Cool! I got one in QT also.

It is a Sea Grass Wrasse (Novaculichthys macrolepidotus) and I have been totally unsuccessful finding any information about. It is not afraid of my hand at all and an extremely aggressive feeder. I have seen him run off the other fish in QT during feedings. He also needs to bury himself to feel comfortable at night. I saw him pacing the tank like a total spaz his first night in QT so I added a plastic tray full of crushed coral. As soon as he realized what it was he immediately buried himself in it and the stress was removed for him. I am not sure if I am going to put it in my reef or not as It seems like it could very easily be a trouble maker. If anyone has any thoughts or experience please let us know. And congrats on the new acquisition...

Ever since I saw him, ive been a little infatuated. It appears to be 2 schools...one is ok, other...no shrimps or snails. Ive found some good threads on RC about him...excellent nudi eater (for zoos), some say he's ok with a tank..no probs. Others said theres would eat nass. snails (grab the nose, shake and eat..) Apparantly, as strong hunter fish. Will eat every pod inthe system. Im seeing it compared to a xmas tree wrasse which was along the same lines, but mine was cool...I sure am thinking about pulling the trigger on him, but after some more research. Ive found some threads on reefs.org, other boards as well. If I see any more, i will most certianly post.

Well, this morning sucked! I went to check on my QT tank with the Sea Grass Wrasse in it and he was on the freaking hardwoods. Some how he got out of the tank; there is only a tiny (maybe 1?) gap that he could have escaped from. I just had to share my loss.

:sad: :sad: :sad:

:cry:

I know the feeling... I've given up on Wrasses, they keep jumping out or going sunbathing on my centerbrace and turning themselves into fish-jerky...

Yeah i was looking forward to report on its status in my reef. I had a feeling it would be a snail/hermit assassin and move the shells around, similar to a harlequin tusk. Maybe I will try that in my reef next if I can find a good one from Australia.

Someone at the meeting won a Green Leaf Wrasse. It would be nice to hear how it is doing now.

I saw that and would like to hear about it too. On another note. I took home a pigmy angel from the rafle and put it in it's own QT tank and it died 24 hrs later. It sure did seem like it was poisoned, I know nothing I did caused it to die.

Sorry to hear that. It looked pretty and seemed healthy when I chose it.
