This is what I had last summer except mine would not blow off ... I spoke to Frank at Frank's tanks about it as it wrapped up the Onyx I purchased from him a year earlier -- I found it tangled and dead the next morning. .... I also lost a couple emerald crabs that couldn't get out of it.
When this happened, I had HEARD OF cotton candy algae, but when I googled for more info when it hit me, it was NOT it. I still dont' know what it is or where it came from on a tank that was running about 4 months and it hasn't been back. No clue what I actually did to rid the tank of it either. Scrub and water change. some algae fix. It was gone as fast as it appeared.
Send this to Frank and he will talk to Bob Fenner who may have the answer. I never got a good shot to send him as when I talked to him I had already used up about a dozen toothbrushes to get it off the rock and a package of the blue scrungie pads to get it off the glass.
