What is the Best Fish for a Reef Tank? Beginner-Friendly Picks & Care Tips

Hi everyone,

I’ve been researching what is the best fish for a reef tank? and wanted to get insights from fellow hobbyists here in the DFW reefing community. From what I’ve learned at Reef KG, choosing the right aquarium fish is key to maintaining balance with coral reef animals.

Many suggest that when asking (edit: removed link) what is the best fish for a reef tank?, beginners should start with common saltwater aquarium fish like clownfish, gobies, or blennies since they are hardy and reef-safe. Still, I’m curious what others think is the best fish for a reef tank? based on real experience.

I’ve also been exploring tools like a reef tank maintenance app and improving (edit: removed link) reef tank dosing routines to keep parameters stable. Reef KG highlights that consistency plays a huge role when deciding what is the best fish for a reef tank? and ensuring long-term success.

Would love to hear your recommendations on what is the best fish for a reef tank? and any tips for maintaining healthy aquarium fish in a mixed reef setup.

@Markkevin I've removed your embedded links to unfamiliar websites from above

Personally, "best fish" is so subjective, so I'd recommend do your research based on what you like and expect to go. I've found "reef safe with caution" to sometimes mean they'll eat your favorite corals... I've had my Red Sea Regal Angelfish about a year, and a little less than that is when it ate almost all of my zoas... I knew in advance it was a probability, but I wanted that particular fish more than those corals. (but I do miss those zoas)

I'd love to see a photo of your aquarium!

I’ll also add think long term when selecting a fish. Sometimes we do make impulse purchases and that’s fun too. But when possible plan for the long term with your tank and future tank mates. Marine fish live for a long time (some for decades) so you want to make sure you don’t get one that’s a bad fit for the rest of your future plans. Like mentioned above not reef safe, will it get too large for the tank, fight with other fish you want, etc.
