What is a sun coral, and what are its needs?

i went to a local lfs down here and they had a 15-20 polyp sun coral for sale for 45 dollars. Is this a different type of dendrophylia? Im just wondering the needs for this coral and anyone know what the price range is for these? For reference i have a 30 gallon long with a 250w MH. I need to update my sig!!!!

Thanks, chris

Sun corals are NON-Photosynthetic and actually prefer low light...

They need to be direct-fed frequently...

Here's Marc'a page on care of Sun Corals -

they are cool..In fact, WAS my wifes favorite coral...but i got rid of it. Hate to say it, but was a PITA for me :? (i admit it)

Just didnt fit well for me. Does better in the shade i believe as they will tend to open up during feedings...mine only opened at night, but he was in the open.

These corals are like a high maintanence lady, If you got the bucks to feed her and pamper her, give her a whirl. I had mine trained to open at the same time everyday. Finally reduced feeding to twice a week. Mine could suck down a large cube of mysis like me and a chicken fried steak. Finally gave it away to a club member who I knew would keep up the spoiling
