What in the world is this ? pics attached

I started noticing this on my tank last week and it spread to more area within a week.

It's rather kinda slimy, when I try to pull some off, it took down some of the sand with it as well.

Water parameters are perfect, I have 2 x 65W PC and 2 x 65 Actinic for 10 -12 hours a day. Temp is between 80-81.5 all day and 79-80 at night.
I have a few leathers, hammer, polyps, zoanthoids and mushroom with 5 damsels, 3 blennies and 4 big turbo snail.

Any idea ?

Stan

My powerhead sits towards the top, I tried not to point them down because I don;t want to stir up the sand bed.

Is the lack of flow (stagnant water) the main reason of this ?

Thanks for the response Matt,

I have a seaclone skimmer, POS.... Just ordered an ASM skimmer.

I haven't done any water changes, I was told not too do any water changes for the first 4 months of the tank's life. The tank is 1 month old.
I have been adding water (RODI of course) to top off the tank.

I have been feeding a lot to what the fish can consume. This started ever since I started feeding the coral with phtyoplankton, I'll try to cut back a little. I was told to feed a lot during the initial stages as the fish need to "poop" a lot to cycle the tank quicker..

I will moce the powerhead a bit lower to get more flow on the sand bed...

thanks again

I had some cyno last week in my second tank, and moved some turbo snails from my old tank to the tank with cyano one. And within a couple days, two turbo snails ate it up. I also changed my bulbs as i think they were almost a year old and no cyano anymore.

I am currently fighting this as well and a couple of doses of chemclean and moving a power head where it blows across the sand and "poof" it's gone.

Dale,

where do you buy chemclean from ? what brand ?

thanks

Stan

I bought it at Frank's Tanks although any LFS store should have it. I think it is chemclean brand but unsure. It comes in a little bottle with a scoop and will treat 300 gallons. I can check when I get home tonight and let you know.

Just so I'm looking at the same stuff, mine appears to be more brownish in color... Same stuff or different? It started appearing right after I upgraded my lights from the stock single flourescent to 2X95WPC in a Coralife Lunar 36".

Trates are normally right about 20, though I'm removing the bio-balls in my wet-dry after reading and re-affirming with several others that they will generate a ton of nitrate and the LR I have will handle all else... 46.5# of LR in a 46G bowfront.

Here are a couple of shots...
Also a shot of something growing on one rock that is purple and has the consistency of a brillo pad... This stuff is around 24X7

Water flow is really good in that location, as the stuff is actaully waving in the water... I've not gone after any chemical solutions yet and have cut my feedings down to every other day (though my kids in the tank are not pleased). I also powered down 1/2 of my lights to cut its other fuel supply. A 5 gal water change is scheduled for tomorrow...

Other than the time sitting in the box by the manufacturer... I'd say 3 weeks... Found that product listed up a few entries... Boyd's Chemi-clean... Another product looks promising for phosphates... the Chemi-mat. Heading to Exotic Aquatics to see if they have either or both once they open...

If you're headed to EA, then you might also want to consider a phosphate reducing sponge / media if you have a reactor or canister filter.. You've reduced the amount of new phosphates entering the system by cutting back on food, but the existing phosphates in the system are getting consumed / excreted.

Cyano needs: light, a place to grow without predation, nitrates, and phosphates.

IME, Chemi-Clean is pretty effective against Cyano. Not sure if EA sells it but I have purchased it before at DNA."]

Trying to keep my business with EA... DNA burned me with a torch coral during their "sale" it died of brown jelly... Did two dips and it never recovered... The remaining 4 corals are happy and healthy though.
If EA doesn't have it then I guess I'll make the trip further south...

Thanks

If I recall correctly, they make a phosphate reducing mat that you can place on top of the blue / white filter mat. There's one that absorbs ammonia that's a tan color, I think the phosphate reducing one is green.. could be mistaken, though.

EA had the Chemi-clean. I asked about the mat (from MATT) and bought one that is listed as all-inclusive... Amonia, Phosphates, etc... Bought it in the hopes that it couldn't hurt to add one more layer of filtration.
