well, in a moment of potential ignorance, i purchased a flame angel this weekend ... after getting home and trying to remember why i felt funny about this purchase, the bells went off .... the potential of this fish to decimate my tank ... am i over-reacting - any suggestions? I am already dealing with a goofy bicolor blenny attacking my clams - thanks.

I added one about a month ago and he is doing fine, but I hear they can be fine for years and then turn to the dark side. Just keep him well fed. He should be fun to catch. Mine gets spooked easily, but not as much as my hippo/blue/regal tang.

It depends a lot on what type of corals in your tank. Generally soft and LPS corals are left alone. There is a 50/50 chance on SPS corals. I have had a Flame Angel for 6 years now without any problems, he has never touched the corals.

I also agree with Mitch just keep it well fed.

I've had one for almost a year and he didn't nip on anything til I added my first acan which must be delicious as it's the only coral he nips on. He's left candy canes frogspawns hammers and torches alone as far as I can tell in the time I've had him. I thought it was opposite what David said though about angels - I thought they were usually good with SPS but prone to nipping on fleshy LPS like acans and welsos?

I had a African Half Back Angel who would nip on the small polyps on my SPS corals.

I've had a Red Flame and a Rusty Angel for about a year now, but they do nip my SPS from time to time. They don't touch my LPS Corals. It's beginning to bug me now because it makes them close up. They might be out of my tank if it doesn't get better, as I'm wanting to start focusing on SPS Corals soon. I believe eventually they all become troublesome. Of course, the size of your tank probably makes a huge difference in how often they bother the same corals.

aah, potentially good news :)

the tank has no sps ... a ton of lps, softies etc ... what all do you typically feed your angels? Thanks

My cherub never nipped at anything, but decimated a clip with garlic seaweed.

It fed on anything i put in the tank, mysis, brine, squid, spirulina, and NLS.

From everything ive been reading recently on pygmy angels, they are grazers more than anything. Personally, if you have a good amount of rock for it to graze on I think it will be fine even if you add sps.

I put in a flame angel about 3 weeks ago. He initially tasted practically every coral in my tank, but has now cut back on his nibbles. It seems he still picks at my SPS and clams, but leaves my acans and brains alone now. It's frustrating to see it happening, and I honestly want to get mine out of my tank. I haven't had any luck catching him yet though, so back to the drawing board. My clams used to never close up, but now, they are constantly twitching when my fish go anywhere near them.

Quick off topic, ctaylor81, your avatar reminds me of a video on youtube of some douche putting a live, and what seemed freshly bought damsel, into a green carpet anemone. It looked like the guy snipped the fins and was holding it with tweezers. That wasnt by chance you was it? ;-)

As far as food, they eat everything. I also feed them Angelfish Formula which is sponge based. Good for them. It's funny my Regal Angel which is suppose to be more troublesome doesnt't touch a thing. Not even my zoas. Go figure.

Agree with the others, well-fed, lots of rock for grazing, bigger tank, should be fine.

Slightly off topic, but drop a bottle trap in there and get the blenny! I am certain some blennies become satanically possessed.... been there meself....

thanks ... i may have to if he persists .... i secretly hope he makes a mistake and lands on one of the 12 maxi mini nems i have in the tank :)
