What happened to my plate coral?

Last night, my plate coral was fed, fat and happy, I come home today to find it like this. What could be wrong?

I cut off the top of a water bottle and drilled some holes in it to cover him up and protect him.

Here are my parameters with Tetra test strips:

Nitrate - 0
Nitrite - 0
Alk - 300
pH - 7.8

Crappy cell iphone pics. First is with cool whites only.

Alk at 300 is umm, almost 17dkh? Am I doing that right? That seems a big high with a pH of 7.8.
I'm not sure how much I trust a Tetra test strip though.

Even if it dies, don't remove it from your tank. In a few months, you'll have new ones.

You can put it somewhat out of the way, but I think a little light on the skeleton would promote new life more quickly.

Do you have any shrimp? They may have been snacking on the coral and ripped it up.

It's possible. The coral may adjust to the new traffic in the tank, if the tissue is still on it. Tough to tell from that picture.

I can still see small specs of green where it's tentacles are supposed to be under the actinics so I assume it to still be alive at the moment.
