What does it cost to run your tank?

I did a little figuring tonight to see what it costs to keep my saltwater addiction alive. My angled tank is tied into the 280g reef, but I still broke up the numbers a little.

--- 20g nano ---

VorTech - 7w
MH - 150w
Mag 5 - 45w

.007 x 24 = .168 (kwatts per day)
.150 x 8 hrs = 1.2 (kwatts per day)
.045 x 24 hrs = 1.08 (kwatts per day)

Those numbers add up to 73 kWh monthly x $.124375 which equals $9.13 per month. So for about $10 a month, this tank is powered. The filtration is part of the 280g reef system, so I'm not including that.

The VorTech pump costs me $0.62 a month to provide the wave action I'm seeing. A real bargain.

$4.48 is the light, and $4.02 is the return pump.

--- 280g reef ---

3 MH bulbs - 900w x 6 hrs per day
2 VHO bulbs - 187w x 11 hrs per day
Return pump - 141w x 24 hrs per day
3 Vortech pumps - 63w x 24 hrs per day
Calcium Reactor - 65w x 24 hrs per day
3 Fuge lights - 62w x 8 hrs per day
2 Skimmer pumps - 116w x 24 hrs per day
Prop light - 147w x 7 hrs per day
2 Icecap Fans - 12w x 7 hrs per day

All of the above runs 19.3 kWh per day, or 579 kWh per month.
Take that number times $.124375 and it adds up to $72 of basic operational cost.

Not included are a handful of tiny pumps running the suncoral tank, phosban reactors, flow in the prop section and refugium, which is probably around 100w for about $9 a month more, which puts the tank at $81.

In the winter, I run a couple of heaters which definitely cost me money. I only use two and they don't have a lot of wattage, thus they run longer than they should have to trying to bring the tank temperature up to 79.5 so they can shut off again. I probably need two 500w heaters so they can do the job quickly and save money, but what I have is a 300w & a 250w heater. That's something I'll need to resolve this fall, and make sure the DJ power strips can handle the extra wattage load, if they were to kick on during the lighting period. For now, the heaters are turned off for the summer months. My tank doesn't drop below 78.5F at night, which I've been watching for the past few weeks. (I'm not figuring heaters into this math.)

The A/C unit definitely adds to the monthly expense. If the circulation fan is running, it uses 116w of power. When the compressor kicks on, it uses 727w. If the garage is closed, it works even harder and uses something closer to 780+w of power IIRC. Last year, I measured the window A/C with a Kill-o-watt for two weeks straight to find out how long the compressor was on versus how long just the circulation fan was running, and it was pretty much 50/50. I hate to even calculate this one. 303 kWh equaling $38 a month.

For the past few days, I've been able to turn off the window a/c during the late night hours, and turn it on around 1pm. Today, I forgot and didn't even turn it on until 3:30pm, after the lights had been on for some time and the fish room was getting toasty. However, the tank was 79.8F, which is due to the fact that my lights are 18" off the water. I don't really want to test the theory of what will happen if the A/C unit is off for the full day with the fish room closed up, but I do have the Aqua Controller II set to turn off the lights if the tank reaches 83F.

Add on the live rock cooking vat and the quarantine tank of 36 kWh and the angled tank of 73 kWh, and it looks like my little hobby is soaking up 1063 kWh per month, which is about $132 per month. My electricity rates are about to jump up slightly, which will put it around $149 per month in total electricity usage.

Too bad EcoTech can't come out with a VorTech Air Conditioner. My three pumps use $5.64 of electricity a month to provide all the flow in my reef.

Here's a handy calculator that does all of the work for you.

Marc when you finish your manifold plumbing, what are you looking at saving dollar wise per month from all of the small pumps and powerheads that you can pull out of your sump? That's also a small bit of heat that you won't have to worry about.

Did mind on the reefcentral calculator and I came up with 415.19kwh per month and a cost of $49.82 per/month. I guess that's about right since Marc has a 300+ system costing him $150 a month and mine is a 120.

I've never sat down and tried to figure it out ( or looked up the power consumption of the individual components ) but I have guestimated/assumed that my tank probably cost around $100 to $150 a month.

If I ever do add it all up and find out for sure I would probably drain it.

It's better not to add up the cost of any of the things we buy for this hobby. It could really get crazy

The funny part is that is merely electricity. That doesn't include corals, fish, dry goods, repairs, DIY projects, new cameras, new harddrives, website expenses, woodworking, electrical, plumbing, framing and more.

While I tuck away all receipts, I try not to add them up.

Dont add them all up Marc. You will go crazy heheh, i tried that once and man it keep bothering me till now, that is why my 300g still on hold, because i can set it up and get all the equinment just the maintain part that what scare me.........hehehe

Thank you
Tommy

I think you're right. I'll abstain.

I added up my 150 gallon costs and its roughly 100 a month, I think for water changes/top off/electricity. I added ice cap fans to the canopy and the stand and now my top off is 1.5 to 2 gallons a day and my chiller is on as I am typing set at 82 degrees. I also switched my lights to come on 5:30 am to 12:30 pm to try and keep the house cooler in the heat of the day. *This did do wonders by the way*I am also considering the idea of turning the lights on at 10 pm to 5:30 am in the morning for summer and just view ing the tank with moon lights during the day to keep the house cooler. We keep our ac at 80 degrees so this keeps my chiller busy this time of year! My light fixture is 2 150 watt metal halides with 4 T5 54 watts and moon lighting. Does anyone know what the coolest running external pump is? I have been shocked at how high a temp just my water is just running an 1200 gph external pump.

It sounds like you have the glass tops on the top of your tank if it is getting that hot, or your canopy is sealed on all four sides. It should run cooler, although keeping your home at 80F is a factor.

All tops are off the tank and I have a 3ft refugium in the stand. I also have a tall version of a canopy with an open back and two temp controlled ice cap fans in the canopy and 2 ice cap temp controlled fans in the stand. When I set this tank up with no lights and just the external pump only running in the refugium the tank was running up to 86 degrees last May. I am on my 2nd external pump, thinking that the first one was the problem but nope...
So I then bought a chiller.. ouch... I have had several reef tanks and this one runs the hottest of them all just because of the external pump. I think the one on the tank now is a gen-x

That doesn't make sense to me. Tell me what other equipment is in the sump, the refugium and the display.

No heaters plugged in?

Do the IceCap fans ever run on high?

150 oceanic tank 6ft long, I have the tall victorian style stand and canopy. The light hood is hanging in the canopy 60" hood with 2 150 watt metal halides 4 54 watt T5's. 3 ft Trigger refugium with 1200 gph external gen x pump. I just recently added 2 new hydrolla's (Sp) power heads on each end of the display tank for circulation. Till then I was just using the 1200 gph external pump by the refugium for water circulation. The heater is unplugged since around Feb sometime. The water temp was a shocker for me from the setup, I really thought going to a 150 all my water temp problems were going to be solved but that was the begining. sigh. I was to far into the project to turn back but I started missing my 50 and 68 gallon reefs around this time. This 150 gallon tank is my dream tank but I did underestimate what the cost would be to finish it right and then maintain it! Other than that I LOVE IT!

If you have a thread with pictures of your setup, please point us to it. I'm sure we can figure this out.

The room temperature may be the biggest problem though. I keep my house around 74F to 78F. I can't stand 80F indoors, so I pay more to be comfortable.

The only one of the ice cap fans that runs high usually is the one by the the external pump and that is if the probe is close to the pump. Oh and I just recently put the fans on timers too so they only turn on when the lights are on since it was evaporating so quickly. 1.5 to 2 gallons a day as it is now and that seems crazy enough for me at this point. Is that pretty normal for a 150 or I gues 180 or so with the refugium too..

You should dial in the fans to the time you need them to run, rather than match your lighting. My VHOs turn on at 11 am and the fans turn on around 1pm. The MH stagger on throughout the day, and the fans run until 9:30pm currently. As the summer heats up our homes, I may run the fans until 1am or 2am. You'll want to find that sweet spot.

The fan sensors should be where the heat is.

If you can lower the tank temperature, your chiller will run less and that will save you money every month.

I think you may have a very valid point. Lucky for me 80 feels ok :D I can say the tank helps my house stay warmer in the winter I noticed.... That is a plus for someone who hates being cold :D I just don't like electric bills over 300 anytime of year  Thanks for the inputs and thoughts :D
