what do i put in a refugium?

I just got a ecosystem 3116 sump/refugium form a friend ... I have the sand in it and a few small rocks, what do I need ?

Technically, a refuguim is just an area seperated from the main system with no predators of the microfauna... Thus, a "refuge"...

Having said that, it's traditional to have some type of macro algae in a refuguim... Cheatomorph is a popular choice...

Cheato is pretty easy going, you can pretty much just put it in, but of course you'll need to light the refuguim in some manner for it to survive and thrive...

You will quite often see people offering Cheato up for free or cheap on the forums, and most fish stores sell it for a reasonable price as well... (I'd offer you some from my refuguim, but I just pruned it heavily this weekend... But I can tell you Fish Gallery should have plenty of it for a while now! )

I have tons of Cheato if you are out by DNA (north dallas gb & marsh)

I always prune and end up having to throw it away on Sunday anyways.

Depends on what you put in there... Some types of algae can handle 24x7, some prefer a little break... Personally, I run the light opposite of my display, and 18 hours on, 6 hours off...

I run my refugium lighting from 10pm to 6am daily, or 8 hours a day.

Can Cheato still grow and work as well with 24x7 lighting said:
Yes, I have Caluerpa and Cheateo in the same fuge. Not as much Caluerpa as I use to, but I leave my lights on 24/7 and the stuff grows like crazy.
