What do frogspawns like?

[I've had a frogspawn for a while, but it is definitely not acting up to its full potential. In other words, it doesn't seem to come out as big and bushy as it did at the store I bought it from. It is near the top of the tank. I have 4 65watt power compacts (2 10000K daylight, 2 Ultra-actinics). Good circulation throughout the tank. Any suggestions?]

[:)
Mine grows like crazy and I feed it Brine with an eye dropper type thing.
I feed them twice a week and they grow and grow. We started with 4 head, -8/10 months ago and I have had to split it 7 times already and the parts that are split are growing like crazy again.
I think it is all in your Pars and of course some straight on/hands on feedings, maybe just to get them going. I kind of think that Bubble Tip and Frogs and the like, need direct feeding and if you do not mind getting your hands wet, then feed feed feed, to see if it makes a difference.
I love to twice a week, hand feed every guy and gal in the tanks we have.
Best of luck.

[Can you be more specific in your hand feeding method? I tried to feed my trumpet corals, but it was virtually impossible as current tends to move the food around. They would take almost 15 minutes to open and consume a single brine shrimp (frozen, yet thawed), and I had to guard it the whole time to keep my shrimp from stealing that 'potato chip'!

What do you do to get the coral interested in the first place? Do you turn off your powerheads? I'd like to hear more, as you've had personal success.]

[Marc,
I have fed my candy cane, shrimp pellets(break into very small chunks), and brine shrimp, mysis shrimp.
I turn the powerheads off, and using the baster, blow a little
on them, a few minutes later the feeding tenacles come out.
Then I try to gently baste them with some more shrimp.
hth,
my cleaner shrimp died a while back, so I don't have
the problem of him stealing food from the corals. :cussing:]

[marc
i just wait till the lights go out and the feeder tentacles come out on my trumpets. then i simply place food right near the mouth.]

[So you all rely on the tentacles to grab the food just like an anemone. I see. Mine never extended them very far, and food just blew off of them quite easily. I didn't stop the current in the tank though.

Anyone feeding with Golden Pearls? I'm about to get some in the mail next week. Plus I'll be hatching brine nauptali soon as well. Maybe I should feed some while the lights are on, and later some more when the lights are off?]

[Thanks for everyone's response. I will try target feeding. I feel sorry for it and I DO NOT like to see my animals not doing their best. It saddens me any time I loose something because I feel responsible for the care and well-being of them. I constantly read and educate myself the best I can on the whole saltwater hobby, but sometimes things just don't seem to work out even if I think I am doing everything right. As a matter of fact, I am in awe of the whole 'best salt mix' to use issue. I'm a bit depressed about that whole thing...makes me want to scoop up all my critters, drive them to the ocean, and toss them in.]

[I guess I'm the only one that doesn't direct feed. I just feed the whole tank at once. :) But when I do feed the FS grabs it's food and takes it in. If the tenticals are good a sticky[which they should be if it's healty} they will catch very small partical of food and consume them.

Marc, as for your trumpet. If you'll feed the fish first this will provoke a feeding response and the trumpet will put it's tenticals out. Mush your food up real well and let it float past the tenticals. They will catch food even if it's to small for you to see. But as stated above the trumpet coral is a night feeder. Alot of our corals are. So I make sure not only to feed during the day but also sometimes when lights out to ensure everyone is eating. HTH]

[I have been target feeding for a while now. I generally will take my baster, and dump just a tad bit for everyone to wake-up too, with PH's on.

After a few minutes everyone comes out. I turn off all PH's, and feed the fish/inverts first. Then I go around to each coral and give them a little bit of whatever we are eating that day.

Then I give everyone 30-45 minutes to consume, during this time, I add jsut a tad more into the main area for the inverts/fish so they dont steal.

This has been quite successful for me on all my coral.

HTH,
Steve]

Yes, I guess that is what it is called, target feeding. I do turn the wavemaster off, on it's feed program button and then let the water settle. I just use this stick like baster thing, witch I use as well to fill the test 5ml water tubes. I draws in a 2-3-4 ml of photo and or brine, nano/tetra-photo, rotifers, and so on. I use a special device for feeding and if I explain it will sound odd and people will laugh, but I can show you the procedure, and thus allowing you to get,(possibly)better growth rates.
I do not want tell this on-line, do to the fact that I might want to put this out as an invenshion of sorts, but I will say it does work and that's about all I can say about it.
The idea is true, it has been explained in posts above and for many years and in many books, people explain how to hand feed corals, but I think not everybody wants this kind of hands on tank/micro management of the systems.
I think the magority of people like to sit around and do as little as possible and that is where the growers and watchers differ. People with good care should see there animals not only do good, but sometimes even see exceptional growth.
I/We do not have any perfect systems, that is for sure, but I do believe that being creative in your personal husbantry is very important in caring for the animals. We all are looking for the personal and perfect feeding systems and the way things are going in this hobby, it is sure to get better and better, with the brains that are marketing the products out here now.
Some 15 years ago, you could not count on even keeping the guys/gals alive at all, with some of the stupid ideas people had and passed along, now all this advice on-line and everywhere is GREAT!!.
Keep posting, everybody's ideas are great.
I think I spend to much time feeding corals, but of course I will now get back to my feedings. :blush21:]
