What corals to start with?

I'm sure this has probably been covered a million times, but I'm going to ask anyway. I have a 72g bowfront with about 90 pounds of lr as my main tank. I also just put up a 12g nano today. Keep in mind that I have only had the big one up for a few months. I'm despratly needing color in there, and I'll get a list together of the very few things I have in there tonight, and hopefully some pictures. Any advice and direction as far was what to put in there and where to get it would be much appriciated.

Well.. see, the problem is that all the good corals for newbies- the ones that are hardy and can tolerate a new tank- are also the ones that take over eventually.

Mushrooms, GSP, Zoas, Xenia, Softies.. all usually do well in a new tank- just be sure to isolate them so that they can't take over.

Thanks. I filled the nano with the water change water from my 72 today, and moved a small zoa that I had in the larger tank to see how it does. I also have a yellow tube in the big one that is about 5 inches that I had considered moving, but not so sure.

i do not have much myself and they are all softies. the only hard coral i had was a frag of candy cane that was at the local fis shop that was dyeing and instead of giving me the frag to try and save it he charged me 10.00 for it. anyway it did not make it but it was 10.00 well spent imo to try. at the time i tried my tank was 6 months old and the candycane lived for 3 months after i got him. you might get lucky as i did after 6 months but i reccomend 6 moths for softies and at least a year for hard

GSP, Xenia, Mushrooms, Button Polyps.

Simplify your life, and take the money you'd spend right now on corals, let's say $75, and buy 3 good test kits.

Get into a habit of testing your water every 3rd day, before you go to bed, and write it down. After two weeks, or 6 tests, see how the pattern is, and if it fluctuates.

This will give you an indication of your stability. Keep in mind, Nitrates low, equals success with less hardy corals and fish, but paramaters consistent, equal a much happier environment overall.

My nitrates have never been below 20, but they've also never been above 30. So.. ... .
