Weird skimmer type?

I was reading a marine fish breeding guide, and read about a type of protein skimming I'd never seen before.

It explained all the other types, co-current, venturi, etc, and then it had this one as well.

It was basically a tube, filled with live sand, and then water was forced UP through the tube, and out a valve on the top.

Doesnt really sound like a type of skimming to me at all, unless I'm missing something?

It said that the benthic creatures in the live sand combined with the upward movement of the water and the incredible amount of surface area made this one of the best form of skimming.

But again, I dont see where it "skims" anything.

Ideas?

looks interesting. does seem like a skimmer, but it looks like something interesting to try. Anyone have any experience with this?

By their diagram, it almost looks like you could do it with a canister.

Not many people outside of very large displays (i.e. zoos, etc..) use fluidized sand filters anymore. They work, but require maintenance and frequent back flushing to remain effective. I use two different fluidized bed filters, one for phosphate removing media and the other for carbon.

When I was in LA, I visited Reefermadness.us, they were just down the street from my client. They had a large one in there for their 3 3000G holding areas and it was an impressive looking device. It was about 6ft tall and 24 inch diameter (est.). Ive not seen them in a home situation however....

Big tanks use them as it keeps the water clear. It's a big mechanical filter. They are largely unneeded for smaller aquariums but could work if your willing to mess with them.
