Wavemaking Question

Instead of purchasing a costly wavemaker device/set up... Is there any reason I can't use light timers on maxijets and have the maxijets set to go off/on at 15-30min intervals? With multiple maxijets going on and off randomly it would create the same effect right? My dad has a collection of light timers that can be manually set to turn off/on at different intervals. So if I have 3 Maxijets pointing in 3 different directions (2 at each other, one at potential dead spots) with one turning on every 5-10 minutes (one turning off as the other turns on, with a 3rd constant during the transition).

Its really cheap - I just need two more maxijets! I want to have a lot of flow on the top portion of my new 50g square tank for SPS corals but gently flow towards the bottom to accommodate slower moving Leaf Scorpionfish. The new tank is square so I'm hoping I can do this with 3 maxijets as a wavemaker/pulsing thing, 2 koralias, and the HOB refugium and have enough flow for everyone to be happy.

Okay, I think I'll do that and add a flow deflector to one or both of the other Koralias for more dispersed water flow.

I'm really psyched about getting the new tank set up since I'm actually thinking it through and planning ahead! Yay!

get one of these and plug your maxi jets into it a you have a good wavemaker

Here is a question for a question, i had the same idea of using a timer but was told that the difference of a timer and a wave maker is that the timers will start the pumps at full speed and that that is bad on the pumps. The wave makers start the pumps with a soft start which means that they don't get the full voltage on start. Does anyone else have any input on this aspect?

There's a wavemaker/lighttimer thing that looks to do the exact same thing and is marketed for aquariums. I really don't see any difference from those than what I'm trying to do. Even if I set the timers to go off every 15min it will still provide good flow in addition to everything else I'm planning.

My only concern is that there is a pretty audible click whenever the timer's go off/on.. The tank will be in my bedroom so I'll probably invest in that product you linked, psteelab. I imagine the other 2 plugs are on the other side of the unit? That website has this also:

which is what I've been looking for for AGES for my lights and other pumps. Thanks for the links psteelab, might just order both items to save headaches. :D
