Waterfall Turf Algae Filter, anyone?

Hi All,

I found this post on RC about the turf algae filter. Does anybody here setup this for your tank without skimmer? Can you share your setup (pictures if possible) and your experiences? Thank you so much for your responses.

It worked very well just wish that I had more room under the tank to make it larger. Once up and growing, it needs to be cleaned about every two weeks.

I had one for a while and took it off only because I re did my sump and didn't get back to putting one up again... however... they work GREAT. I don't think ive had such clean sand ever when I had it.

BTW I still ran everything else (skimmer, carbon, filter socks).

One of these days ill get back to setting one up again.

Hi Tito!

I am setting mine back up, and am planning to order a turf algae starter. Do you think that is necessary, or can I do like I did last time, and just let what grows on there naturally take over. My idea to order that starter is really based on thinking that it will speed up the process of colonizing the screen. Since you have done this before, I am thinking you know some things that could help me. Is the turf algae at Inland Aquatics really something that makes a big difference in the effectiveness of the scrubber? They claim it is a specific algae that makes or breaks a scrubber. Thanks!

Daviiiiiid!

Don't get anything, yes it will take 5 more days to start going... But your not going to be worse off with a slow start screen than you are now (with NO screen) lol.

Mine took about 3 days for mine to start going and then it took off. Remember that you also will be cleaning it off so if you buy anything it will essentially be thrown out to the garbage at one point anyway.

Also, algae will be brown the first few weeks and after a while turn actual green. Don't worry.
