Warning about dipping smooth skinned Acros

Just wanted to put this out there for all those hopefully to save a few nice pieces for somebody. It is extremely risky and hard on smooth skinned SPS(dragons, echinata, speciosa, etc). I personally have had them bleach and or waste away in the past, recently had a new buddy go through the same issues. I used revive but have heard several of the "dips" are this way. Please be warned and feel free to comment if you have something to add.

I don't think I have ever had this problem. I use Revive as well. Let's hope I continue not to have any problems.

Do ya'll follow the instructions or use a shorter period or dosage? I gave up on dipping after I lost some speciosa and lokani a year or so ago following the directions. I QT only now on anything questionable, but I'm very in to examining my new additions thoroughly.

I definitely don't follow the instructions. I just eyeball how much is needed and use a turkey baster to blow the water around. The coral usually doesn't sit in the solution any longer than 2-3 mins.

Same here. I also dose it a little heavy I believe compared to others. I don't know of any corals that I have lost that I would attribute there death to the dip. First I temp acclimate the coral. Then, 15ml dip to 1 cup of SW for 10-15min. Turkey baster 2-3 times during the process. Rinse coral off in another small container of tank water, and then the coral goes in the frag tank. Just how I do it, and my observations though.

I dip all my corals and highly recommend dipping them all. I use revive as well as three other dips before I put them in the aquarium and I have seen no specific problems to the smooth sps. As with any coral I have nuked a few in my time, but I have never gotten bugs etc in the display. I think you may have had bad luck with the dips and not some issue with the specific coral.

I have also noticed that the smooth skin acros sometimes die after a Bayer dip. I have been using a 1/88 ratio bayer/tank water, and a minute in the solution using a small power head to go all over it.

Good info folks, keep it comming. If you've had success let hear the % or guestimates of dip vs. water as well as brands you used. I bought 1 bottle of revive, dipped 2 batches of corals per instructions and after seeing most of them react, bleach and a few RTN within minutes I tossed the bottle and never looked back. If I have a coral that doesn't look good I'll melafix it, scrub it , H2O2 it, and remove it from the plug. I'm in no way saying dips can't be successful I just think there are precautions that should be taken with smooth skin acros, you can read threads for hours on this subject.

Success for me on dipping corals.

Revive- about 1/4 cap full to the bag that the coral is in for 10minutes.
Reef dip coral disinfectant - about 1/4 cap full to the bag that the coral is in for 10minutes.
Prazipro- 5-15 drops to the bag that coral is in for 10minutes. SPS usually get 5-10 drops, zoo's get 10-20 depending on how many critters you see dying off. This is by far the best dip for me. All the critters effectually let go of the coral like their eyes are burning and dye.
luguls dip - follow the instructions. The reef dip has iodine in it as well.

Can you tell us what ratio bayer/tank water that you use?

From my experience aquacultered smooth skin will work on revive (mr pacman and Hawkins echinata). Wild and maricultured I use bayer not revive or coral rx

I'm using about 2ml per 1/2 cup tank water. I'll admit it's not an exact science though. I pull some out with a syringe and squirt it in the cup of water.

I don't use anywhere near the strength posted in the R2R thread above. The Bayer is good stuff. I'm using it to dip all corals now. It's cheaper and can be picked up easily at Walmart or Lowes. It's also supposed to kill red bugs which most coral dips won't.

I don't use the ratio in that article either. I use 2-5ml per cup of tank water in a bowl, then blow it around with a turkey baster for 3-5 minutes. I then rinse with clean tank water. I always find little pods and micro fauna in the bath bowl afterwards, so I assume it works. It's just an easy precaution to take.
