Waratah Anemone

hi, I finally got a pretty decent pic of my cute little Waratah Anemone. I've had it for a few weeks but I still never really got a good pic. I feed this sucker whole mysis every other day and he eats like a pig. I usually stop at 3 or 4 shrimp but I think he would probably eat more if I let him.

Waratahs are coldwater species that while adaptable to tropical reefs and more comfortable in colder water so I keep my tank at abot 72-73 degrees.

I know Serk said no Anemones or clams in my tank because of the size of the tank(10 gallons), but I just bought an Aqua C Remora and I also have finally hooked up a light to my two HOB filters which will be used as refugiums as soon as I get my hands on some cheato(any donations? :wink: ) so I am hoping that these two additions will counteract any issues with water quality.

Also my lights are 130 watts PC over the 10 gallon so my lights are fine. :) And the white stuff is some sand that I promptly blasted out of there with a turkey baster after I took the pic.
 
It looks great Heather. Sounds like you are taking the right steps to keep it healthy. Post a full pic when you got the time, I would like to see your tank.
 
The anemone looks great! Good job!

Let me know when you want a handful of cheato, I've got plenty.
 
thanks! though my tank is nothing really to look at right now. only a few things in there. Plus I am about to rearrange the rockwork in order to add two new maxi-jets as well as make room for the remora.

I think I will be moving the rock with the anemone down further into the tank. I have the anemone at the top of the tank because every site I read from says they like intense light but most of the time it hides under a nearby rock, only exposing about half its body(reason I could not get a good pic). It comes more fully out when I am feeding it and will stay out for a bit but then it will move back under the rock.

I am also wanting to eliminate some dead spots and do some arrangement that will hopefully better inhance my ability to view my coral.
 
o that's right! crap. I couldn't go to next wave because I have work at noon that day. I'll just ask someone else then. thanks anyway though.

FYI: I converted two CPR Bak-Paks into HOB fuges and use them on two different tanks alongside the Aqua C. Remora and a HOT Magnum power filter. This is a great system for small tanks. I use three of the 25 watt clamp-on spot lights (Fry?s $8.00) and stuff the return chambers with Cheato and Caulerpea. My DIY fuges are producing zero trates in the display and enough pods to keep a green mandarin fat and happy.

Sounds like you are on the right track for a great Nano Reef.

Converting the skimmers to fuges sounds like a great idea and if they weren't so expensive, I'd probably go that rought also. the cheapest bakpak I've found was 50 bucks but I bought two aquaclear HOB filters for less than that.

I wish I could keep a mandarin in my 10 gallon but I know that probably no matter how many refugiums I have, there probably won't be enough pods.

They come up on the sell/buy forum from time to time. Someone was selling a Dual CPR a while back for $50.00. These are the best ones to convert to a fug because the center chamber is bigger and holds more macros and more space to clamp lights, plus you have a pretty good skimmer working on either side of your fug. Personally, I think my DIY Bak-Pak-Fug skims better than my Aqua C, but it is noisy. I posted about this on the CPR forum and got flamed by a moderator who claimed it was not recommended to use their product in this fashion. Of course he also recommended that I buy the CPR hang on refugium.

You might want to check out Fish Paradise. Their caulerpea is working alive with pods. It's $5.00 a bag.
 
BTW I just wanted to let everyone know not to get this amenone. It has eaten a cleanershrimp, a featherduster, and a small clownfish.

texasschott: Yes, definately stuff your bak-pak with macros, and put one of those clamps on lights. PM me if you need details, so we don't hijack Heather's Nim thread.

BTW I just wanted to say that about a week ago I noticed that the anemone was missing form its spot under a rock and I could not find it. A couple of days ago looked into my tank after the lights had come on and I saw the anemone right next to my clown's frogspawn with the back end of my last clown sticking out of the anemones mouth... :evil:

I am pretty annoyed by this anemone. I did not want to try and take him out because I did not want to aggitate the clown by taking the rockwork apart. So expect to see a species only tank anemone on the sell forum in the next week or so.

if anyone of the 3 people who read this thread want to buy him now, he's 35 dollars. He should be okay in a tank with larger fish.
