Want deeper sandbed

Hello!

I would like to make my sandbed deeper. I'm not sure what the best way is to do this. I already have about 7 to 8 fish and of course some cleaner crew. Do I need to take my fish out before I add more sand or does someone have some suggestions as to how to do this without removing them and stressing them out too much. I appreciate any thoughts and suggestions. Thanks!!

Depends on how you add the sand. Sometimes the sandstorm that it creates can be worse stress to the fish, than removing them and re-adding later.

How were you planning on adding sand?

Dunno if this is the best way, but here's what I did...

Get the new sand ya' wanna add... Assuming it's not live sand, rinse the heck outta it.

Get some wide diameter PVC pipe (2+ inch). Stick the PVC down almost on the surface of the existing sand, and start slowly pouring the new sand in. This will keep the sand storm to a minimum...

Obviously, keep an eye out for any critters on the sand bed and try not to bury 'em... :)

Actually, if you put your hand over the end of the pipe, then put it down on the sand bed, and then pour the new sand in the tube.. then sloooowly pull the pipe up, the sandstorm is even less.

LOL - that wouldn't work in mine, because I can't REACH the end, near the sand - tank is too tall!

Sorry, a little off topic.

It also depends on what kind of sand you are using. Larger grain tends to settle faster than smaller grain. I've used both, at one time or another.

Thanks Jaguar, I will. I haven't been bold enough to try this yet. lol!

Perhaps this weekend or the next. I'm in no hurry. I have the sand. I'm just a little worried about the whole thing. I don't want to stress out my fishies.

I'll update when I have the time and nerve. ;o)

I have been adding sand for the past month. I would suggest to add a little at a time and not go more than about a 1/2" in any area then wait until the next day and add more in a different area. I just have turned off all pumps then add with 2" pipe as described above.
