Vote for Light Fixture Color

I have a 210 gallon tank on the way. I am not sure what color light fixture I want to use. I am trying to decide between black and silver. The tank and stand will be All Glass Aquariums' medium oak. I will not be using a canopy. I know how black fixtures look over a medium oak tank, but do not know about silver. What do you think? Vote now.

Are you talking about pendants? or are you thinking about a long row of lights?
MH's or VHO or T5 lights?
Is this going to be an in wall tank?

Is this tank going to be in the living room or a bedroom.
If it is the living room you may want to re-think the canopy lighting and these tend to reflect most of the light into the tank. The hanging fixture will light uo the room and put a glare on the TV etc...

Still would go with the black

The tank is in the foyer of the house. The living room and dining room are across the way from it. Any light bleeding would not affect any tv viewing. The fixture can also be raised and lowered on it's stands. It will not be suspended from the ceiling or the wall. The tank will replace the tank in the pics in the same spot.

It is funny you mention that. I did have 2 neighbors stop by and ask what that nice blue light was eminating from the front at night. When they saw it was a fish tank, they stayed about 30 minutes asking questions. Now one of them wants to put a 100 gallon tank in wall in their family room.

LOL... It is in a nice location and looks sweet.

To match your stand why not consider a wood crown molding around the hanging fixture, something fancy like the old Billiard Lights had.
Tranquil Scape could make this. and I think it would match better.

After your comment about the light flooding into the room, I began thinking about just that. I hate canopies, but will consider an open top frontal canopy if needed. The only thing is I don't have a woodshop to build one.

You can make a nice 3-sided cap that covers the front and sides, and rest that on the tank 90% of the time. It would only need to be removed when you need access.

I was thinking more along the lines of a 4 sided wood molding that looked like it was hand carved. The corners cut to a 45 degree and joined together. Would look like a kings crown.
The light fixture would sit inside of this.

Or you could leave the back part off and replace it with a flat board so you could mount that to the wall.

Nautilus, I am kind of intrigued by your idea. I am not sure what you mean by "mount to the wall"? Would it not sit on the edge of the tank? Is it suspended over the tank? The fixture I am seriously considering is going to be mounted via legs on the tank. It can be raised from 6" to 11" using the legs. So the fixture will not be suspended.

I also viewed your fish gallery pics on your website. I like the pic of the Sea Dragon. I was at the Dallas World Aquarium about 2 years ago and took a pic of one. It is used in my avatar. I need to get back over there and see the new additions.

Hey thanks for checking my web pages out.. I have a long ways to go on that for sure.

I think your idea would work fine also.
I did a real quick drawing before I had to run off to work so don't laugh at it...
If you have ever put a fireplace mantle up then this would be simular to that.
2x4's with mounting bolts (or something like a bolt) would be in the 2x4 poking towards the tank. Pre-drill the crown mould back peice and slide it onto the bolts and tighten it down with a nut.
Inside the moulding you could have a ledge to sit the lights. Or use a chain and hang it inside the moulding where you could lower it down if needed.

I was thinking this would be around 24 to 36 inches off the top of the tank but you could make it any height you wished too.

Just a thought.

Thanks for the visual. I am more of a modernist when it comes to design, but my wife is more of a traditionalist. So your design will have to be tweaked to make both of us happy. :) At least your drawing gives me a starting point if I decide to do a canopy. I definitely like the idea.
