Vodka dosing?

It takes a long time to see results but when I did it, it was awesome! You have to keep up with it though. Some experience bad algae blooms when they stop. You can also screw things up pretty bad if you're not careful

I vodka dossed, but then switched to vinegar and have seen better results. Maybe because I hate the taste of Vinegar so more of it makes it into the tank!

I dose with 1 part vodka to 3 parts juice or koolaid while working on my tank and find it to be the perfect amount. Repeat as needed!

This is a very specific method of reducing nitrate and phosphate in a tank, and you need to be very well-read with this topic to do it successfully. There was a massive thread about it on RC, and I asked the main advocates to type up a full article on the topic. What you see linked above was five months of hard work to get that all into a recipe for success, but you need to follow it very closely. Please read it entirely at least twice before proceeding.

Once I had the article in my hand, I felt I had a good idea of what was going on and how to dose correctly. It took 8 months of daily dosing for me to see results in my own tank, but from that point forward it was amazing. I ended up dosing vodka for 2.5 years.

With my new tank, I decided I wanted to use biopellets which is easier. I ran a full year with zero nitrate and phosphate.

Vodka dosing isn't for the average hobbyist, and I wouldn't recommend it to new hobbyists.

Bio pellets seems so much easier. I have some BRS pellets running in a 2LFS reactor on my pred tank. The big drawback I see to the pellets is anything that interrupts the suspension for more than 5 mins or so. I had to pull the plug on my pumps to get some work done on the sump and I see a big nitrate spike 4 days later. Seems like you need a solid UPS for the reactor if you go this route.

What I really really really want is a big 300+ long pred tank and to use my 90 gallon as the refugium. A mud substrate, sand topping, 4.2 tons of macro algae for export and it all seems like the Vodka should be in my mixed drink instead of my marine aquarium. I doubt that many of us have the discipline that Marc and other have on dosing and an 8+ month commitment for a return on investment along with a massive supper efficient skimmer to pull the bacterial blooms out. Or I guess one VERY hungry Niger. I've seen mine go to town when big white strands get blown into the tank.

YMMV

BTW. If you are going to get a trigger, seriously look at a Niger. I know everyone has their favorites but the one I have is a trooper. I watched him eat Volitan lionfish poop and ask for seconds.
He got chased out of the tank by a grouper, died, and went to Tang heaven in the Neo 90. True story. He was out of the water for at least 4 minutes. Reminds me of a US Marine. He will never fail for a lack of effort.

Your fish thank you.

I bought a Red Sea Pro nitrate and phosphate test kit and along with it came something called NO3:pO4-X which from what I read is pretty much a carbon supplement. My nitrates weren't bad, probably in the 5 - 10 ppm range but since I have gone mainly SPS I decided to try this stuff and it works well. in a week or so, my phosphates are measuring about .06 and nitrates under 1 with no bacteria blooms.

I have yet to pull off a tank with only 5 - 10 ppm nitrate to date. My Aqueon 65 with exactly 2 fish still reads somewhere near 30 ppm according to API and my wife who isn't nearly as color blind as I am apparently.

My SPS that I have so far does not seem to mind. RMS, mummy chalice, acros both green and purple, BoP green/pink, etc. are all doing well. Lighting and current flow so far seem to affect what I have more than moderate nitrates.

When I was dosing vodka I had O nitrates and my tank was gorgeous! I could grow anything I wanted and the colors were spectacular. My zoas didn't grow very fast but they looked awesome. Low nitrates were only one part of the equation though.
