Vlamingi Tangs

Hello everyone. My name is marlon and Ive heard alot of great things about this site and was wondering if anyone could help. I have tried to keep several vlamingi tangs, and for some reason they do really good for about a month and then all of them start getting these bubbles on there heads and around there eyes. Then the bubble start becoming holes. The diet I give then I think is ok. I give brine and mysis shrimp and always dose it with zoe, zoecon, and zooplex. i feed lots of seaweed as well. Two days ago a guy told me to buy miracle mud, so Ive tried that but was wondering if anyone has had simular problems and how they corrected it.
Thanks, Marlon

Matt,
thank you for replying. They live in a 215 gallon tank. I usually get another one a few days to a week later. The tank right now only has 3 fish in it because I recently had a black unicorn come down with the same thing and die really fast. The fish in the tank are a vlamingi (8 inch), male naso (10inch) and another vlamingi (4 inch) I will try the brocolli though. Theres a few mushroom and toadstools in there as well and they are doing great.

Marlon,

Take a look at this flow chart which should help you determine the caused : http://www.fishyfarmacy.com/fish_diseases/eyes.html

Also the bag of the miracle mud says it helps prevent hlld. I already bought it though since I was so desperate to keep them alive. It cost me 195.00 for 2 bags.

Here is another link you can try out. As for the breathing, what do you keep your temperature in your tank? The higher the temp, the less oxygen levels. I may be wrong and maybe someone else can chime in.

Sorry, did you say 215 gallons? I had mine in a 1090 gallon system and the skimmer was nasty every day! I mean NASTY! I had two Vlamingi, a Black Unicorn and two large Nasos. So uh, 215 is way too small for any of the fish you montioned. NO, they do not grow to just be the size of the tank. They grow to be their natural 19" -22" size. So your problem has to do with water quality.

I had two skimmers running a G4 and G5 and that wasn't enough. You need to be realistic man, who is going to take those tangs when they get to big for your 215? I was lucky and Fish Gallery agreed to take mine and NEVER sell them. But they will undoubtly not want yours with holes in their head and mine being all fat and tasty.

Sorry for being so blunt. But that is how I am am, please come back to reality where we are responsible reef keepers and keep fish that are not doomed to a post on this board at some time in their future "Anyone want a really huge Vlamingi?"

I hate to be so rude, but have you done your reasearch? How many inches of fish per gallon is it? And yeah they are small now but base that off of full grown size, and assume you aren't going to kill it before it gets too big. Man I am mad at seeing this post!

I was very attached to my Nasos and Vlamingi's and thought if I built a 700 system they would be ok, but even then they overwhelmed the system to the point I had to get rid of them. They should be like the Nautilus, DON'T DO IT, should be by their name in the books.

If you really need to know what to feed them go to the Vietnamesse grocery store and get Norii and Red Algae and get Omega One Fiah food, sold at GUESS WHERE? Fish Gallery and Pet Boutique too I think.

Stop with the frozen as anything but treats and brine has no nutritinal value it is like feeding your Iguana lettuce.

Anymore brow beating you need? Let me know so I can beat you up MORE for getting those tangs in a 215! I have been there and done that, please stop killing them! Get a bigger skimmer and keep your water cleaner. Frozen when not strained has alot of junk you don't want in your tank too.

Wow, you seemed alot nicer when I emailed you. Im NEW to the hobby. I like the hobby very much and I could only go off of what people that were selling the fish to me said. When I saw the ones on the fish gallery they said they recieved them from you and thats why i contacted you. But anyways the ones in the fish gallery are in a 500 gallon half of what your talking about with 10 other fish and they are doing fine. They do normal water changes once a week. A 500 or even a 1000 gallons is no problem for me to get. Moneys not an option. I just wanted to know how much space i needed.

Yeah, hes obviously lost is mind and Ive lost alot of respect (what little I had) of him. Ill ask someone else. So James when you see me post questions save your comments for someone else. I only want people who want to share their knowlege not those who want to put down the ones who dont know as much.

Marlon, just to clarify: Faith is James' wife.

Since money is no object, then your next hurdle is education. While we can give you snippets of info about various animals, your best bet is to do all the reading you can.

Our newsletter had a good article about HLLE some time back.

I do hope your fish will recover; this isn't a life-ending disease when treated, as far as I know. My fish have been lucky enough not to get it.

DFWMAS is here to help. We have many members with diverse backgrounds, and what you read isn't always how you'd interpret it if it was a face to face discussion. Just keep that in mind.

Once I re-read it it did seem harsh, I am having a bad day and seeing someone post about Vlamingi's in a 215 sent me off the deep end today.

Yeah FG has them in a 500 gallon but they clean the skimmer daily and feed them like they should be fed, I couldn't do that.

I think my main problem with your post was that you seemed to be getting more fish before you figured out the problem. That is unconcionable in my book. They are live creatures, and when we are killing them, then buying more it puts me off the deep end.

If money is no object then go for it and get a big tank when they get bigger, but I CAN tell you this, it is not just the tank that costs money, my power, and water bill are more too.

To get 200 gallons of RODI water think of all the wastewater I throw away (in my front lawn). I just did a 200 gallon water change this weekend as a matter of fact and it kills me to just dump 200 gallons of saltwater out into the driveway. But my fishies need it.

As for respect, I don't ask for that, just due diligence on your part. If you are listening to the guys in the stores then that is not due diligence. Those guys got like 20 minutes to sell you something and MAYBE glean you a little knowledge. "Yeah yeah that will go into a 215" I can hear them now... Not that alot of those guys don't know stuff. I am just saying to start slow and work your way up to the show tangs and fish, even corals.

Hey post a pic of the diseased fish I think if I see it I could tell you how to treat it, assuming you have a sick tank? If not u want one? I got like a 90 in my shed u can borrow.

When i had my import business I got all kinds of sick fish and talked to the experts at Seachem constantly trying to medicate fish (outside a reef - nothing is reef safe).

thank you for your offer, but I dont have any sick fish in my tank now. Right now I have 2 vlamingis and a male naso. Vlamingis (1-4inches, 1-7 to 8 inches. naso 10 inches) I just bought the 8 incher the other day from a place called Exotic aquatics. I probably payed to much 200.00 but I really like the fish. What Im scared of is that the same problem is going to continue in about a month or so with these vlamingis. I talked to your husband a few weeks ago and he suggested formula one. So today I started them on the flakes and they love it so Im going to make it the primary diet for them and leave the frozen for someone else. All my levels are perfect and I do weekly water changes. But its like is something they are not getting and they are rotting away.

Omega One Flake Food. Not Formula One. I know the names seem the same.

I fed the Tangs I had for years on the Omega One and never had them wasting away. As a matter of fact we thought that if we ever got strapped for money we might eat them, LOL. I think FG has the Omega One and that's what they feed...

The bottles look alike too. I just did a search for the pic I wouldn't recommend buying it from there but I am pretty sure PB and FG etc have the food. Oh they make veggie flakes and other types of flakes too. Not just FAITH FLAKES.

Im sorry the one I have is omega one. When I went to the fish gallery they didnt have any, so I bought it from a place called aquatic design. I sent an attachment of what the bottle looks like. Anyways I thank yall for your help and hope there diet just needs to change because like i said it doesnt happen fast it slowly happens. I bought miracle mud and put in my refugium to try to help as well.
