Viper HQI 70w

I've been considering this clamp on fixture as a possible upgrade for my nano, or, possibly a 10 or 20 gallon. What kind of reputation do these fixtures have? Are they reliable? Anything I need to know about these, good or bad? I figure a 70w should not create too much heat, probably no more than a double lamp PC fixture. Would appreciate any feedback on this. :)

You guys are too slow, lol! I went ahead and bought one of these today. (ok, I just couldn't wait!) Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting this light. I think it will give me enough light for pretty much anything I want to try (not really interested in sps except maybe some montiporas) and it should not cause too much of a heat issue being just a 70watt halide. I'm going to pull the hood off the eclipse and use the tank open top which will also help keep it cooler. I also ordered 20lb. bag of oolitic sand so I can put a real sandbed in this tank. I want to go with a deep sand bed.

BTW, if anyone has anything to say about this light that I just bought...even if it is bad....I still want to know! I won't

I think it looks cool. What was the bulb color temp again? I didn't read the whole thing.

Ok, I just read it over and it's a 14,000K. I think you'll like that a lot. I have had that and it's a real great look.

I think the 14000k will be nice, too! I don't care for the 20000k look as it seems to wash out all the colors, but, this should be just enough blue!

It all depends on the tank depth. 70 watts will allow you to keep medium light demanding items on the sand up to about 14" - after that I'd step up to 150 watt approaching 20" depth.

Plus, it's wierd but the bluer the bulb the better the penetration but the lower the PAR at that depth.

I bought mine from Drsfostersmith.com for $160. plus shipping. Over all I am still very happy with this light. I now wish I had gone for the 150w however, because I am upgrading to a 45 gallon that is 22" deep and the 70w will probably not be enough! The 70wat is great for a nano, though, and you have less heat issues than a higher wattage lamp. The color (14000K) is not as blue as I thought it would be and appears more white to me, but, overall I still like the light color. On my 6 gallon this light is perfect.
