This is a very interesting post, thanks for sharing with us. It shows another concept of reef keeping so feel free to show us more.

Thanks for sharing. By the way, could you share out the details on setup and maintenance? I am just fascinating and amaze with yours video.

thanks for stopping in to visit pico reefs!

The vase is just a fishbowl setup literally. I dose only c balance additives, as water changes alone don't get that coralline well enough for me. the correct dosing of c balance for pretty much any gallon reef is an 1/8th capfull of each additives, but on alternate mornings strictly before lights on. the same dose at 3 pm would kill the tank and spike the pH due to photosynthetic removal of carbonic acid and then the addition of a pH driver (the blue bottle). The affects of even the calcium additive are greatly and lethally amped not too long after photosynthesis begins to remove acids produced by the night before. Only add in mornings!

Since the effect of quality frozen food is to import Ia and micronutrients, no other dosing has been used in three years on the bowl.

Lastly, the lid makes a huge difference. even though its not my design, it was my invention to pair the lid and the vase and that's why these are one of a kind. i got lucky...in any garden area you can get the 8 inch plastic dishes that potted plants sit it...inverted, these rest exactly in the neck of the vase, inner diameter, and this redirects all splatter back into the tank w no saltcreep. This also changes the evaporation constant from four times daily were it open, to once every three days! The reefbowl is partially restricted evaporation control.

i have to say i dont normally sit through long videos like that but i did for yours. very nice, definately thanks for sharing. the look of the little tank is just great, i love full, complete reefs like that...big or small.

thank you very much for stopping by. I hope to see some of the shops listed on this board next time im in town

these pics show laser-clear detail of the early acropora and hydno growth. The hydno was superglued to the side of the tank and then about `1.5 years went by until this pic, then the table top full growth shot is nearly another year past this mark in the photo sequence. Its really too bad I didn't back up my laptop, i had over a thousand original pico pics on it and it crashed. now the only ones I have are the littany of jpegs from ten years of web board posting I have been locating and redownloading. 2/3rds of the were never posted though and that documentation is gone sadly thanks to good old windows corruption

Very interesting! I have wondered how small is too small in the world on Nanos but that is really amazing. So if that thing is portable you should come by one of our meetings some time for show and tell.

This is a great idea.... :D

man I ain't travelling out of lubbock till i get a good bonus check but if any of you boys happen to be flying in for any reason or maybe passin through to Amarillo holler and we'll have a reef and a jam at my house!

i drove this to plainview once this is a pic from the vid. I took the electrical plug for the powerhead, seen resting on top of the tank, and plugged it into a laptop charger outlet in my car so it wouldn't get anoxic on the hour drive.
too bad there's no way to fly with it and be the first airborne aged reef tank lol

Just posting some updates of brown monti growth...Ill make a new video in September to show the fifth year mark for the bowl, I just keep trimming corals out and making frags as needed:

also wrote a little paragraph about the history of pico reef work...not nano reef but picos 2 gallons and below from the 70's till now

google:

"the history of pico reef biology" for a unique perspective on small tanks. Hardly any professional work is published regarding pico reefs but that time will change, I was hoping my article best positions the early work before the fad caught on.
