VHO ?

I see that there is a 46.5" and a 48". Do I assume correctly that the 46.5 is probably what I need to fit inside my canopy? It's 49" inside.

? to fit in some smaller canopys lol ? i have the 46.5 over my 50 in tank it works fine. if u look at some bulb cost more for the small size diff

Most of the time, the shorter than standard bulbs are designed to run inside pre-existing canopies as retrofit kit bulbs. Several manufacturers have caught onto that and have designed light hoods that use the shorter bulbs. Since the number of bulbs produced is lower from standard length, the cost goes up to make it worth while to produce them

Typically the 46.5" VHO kit is required for Oceanic (and Oceanic style canopies that cover 48" tanks but with the wood and support on the "inside" of the 48" mark, not the outside like most canopies made today. Almost every Oceanic canopy for 48" tanks I've seen require the 46.5" kit. See the pics below...

When I used the 46.5" bulbs on my Oceanic 90G and add end caps its something like 47 3/4" inches across and fits with less than 1/8" on each end. 48" bulbs would not fit. It's pretty tight in there!!

Ya what he said. Usually if you have a 4 ft tank the space inside the canopy is exactly 48" (obviously depends on the design) aligning with the outside of the tank. If you through in encaps then you are suddenly down to needing a bulb that is 46.5"

Then you have to
