Venting for sump area?

How big should vent holes be?

I'm planning to make smaller 1" holes for wires to the tank (light and pumps) and to the wall. As of now I have only made a hole for my overflow/return as seen here:

If you want really good circulation, you can drill 2 holes and mount 2 computer fans ( really cheap at Fry's or Tanner ) and mount them to your stand... One pushing air in and the other pulling air out. Will help with heat and humidity.

I'm considering fans. Seems best but I'm wondering if I can get by fine without em.

A fan blowing in would be ideal. Air will find a way out, including if you add some type of vent on the other side. The 120mm fans from Icecap/Coralvue have a heat sensor, so the fan will run at various speeds based on temperature in the cabinet. When they run on low, you don't hear them at all.

I doubt your hole is large enough for the two bulkheads at the moment, but you'll know for sure soon enough. You may need to elongate it with a jigsaw.

I got a cheap clipon fan from Walmart. It's plugged into an RKL which turns it on when temp gets to 76. It's clipped to an opening in the back and blows across the sump. Works for me.

Well fan it is. One fan on the bottom pushing cool fresh air in and vents on the top releasing heat and humidity.

Thanks for the comments and good tip on the heat sensors. I have a apex jr and I also have a manual fan controller from an old PC build. I'm thinking the manual one will do the job since the jr has limited switch outlets.

On the plumbing hole for the top. I'm building for a reef octopus lux-t90 which has a single hole for overflow/return.

So I'm running with the fan off in the cabinet. It's cooling the tank and causing the heater to work extra ...
