vampire wrasse

Has anyone heard of a vampire wrasse? I have been told that they mimic a cleaner wrasse but instead of cleaning the fish, kill them. Wondering if this is true and if so how to identify one. I seam to have a very strange epedemic going on in my tank and am to the point of considering this as a viable option. please help.

Never heard of one.... what is the epidemic going on in the tank? Look for the common place before getting exotic :)

There is a false or mimic cleaner wrasse (Aspidontus taeniatus taeniatus), they take bites out of fish but don't think it could just outright kill them. I'm with DaveJ....keep it simple, verify water parameters, acclimation procedure etc. A bit more information on your problem and tank would be helpful...such as how long has it been setup, stocking levels etc.

110gal, about 150lbs LR, set up about 4 months ago, have refug with 20lbs miracle mud and a very thick bed of 3 types of calurpre. do about 20 gal water change every week. have auto top off so salinity is very constant, the last couple weeks my nitrates have been about 10-15 but everything else is 0. a few corrals; galaxia, frogspawn, candycane, kenya trees, spaghatti coral, zenya, orange and purple monopora... something or other? toadstool, pagoda cup... and fa few other little frags that i'm not sure what they are,, some mushrooms and zoas... all those are thriving, doing awesome, no problems at all ever! but the fish... OMG... I have never in any tank I have ever had, had half the problems i have here... started off with a flame angel, scooter blenny and cleaner shrimp...added a small dejardanii tang, it died, the flame died, cleaner shrimp died. slowly a few more fish, a few deaths, eventually i wound up with a powder brown tang, two yellow headed sleeper gobies, scooter blenny, ember blenny, falco hawk, corral beauty, mandarian blenny, corase wrasse, cleaner wrasse... think that is it... everything was looking great and doing awesome. went on vacation for two weeks and my buddy who is way over the top into reef tanks and aquariums. (he has a business setting up and maintaining tanks) so pretty much knows what he is doing... watched my tank and few the fishies while i was gone. i guess at some point ick broke out and got the tang sick, he ran almost an entire bottle of kick ick thru the system... the tang got some color back and was starting to look better but died on thursday, then my flame angel started looking hazey eyed and white spotted and one sleeper goby was MIA and the other was acting not normal and the mandarian was MIA.. now this morning the yellow head is laying on the ground about to go, haven't seen the corral beauty yet... pretty much almost every fish I get eventually winds up with parasites or ick or fungus or something. At one point or another I have treated the tank with Rubys bacteria treatment and with KICK ICK, i've tried doing more frequent water changes and feeding food soaked with ginger and garlic... they just keep dying!!! I am almost to the point i am ready to get rid of the whole thing.. breaks my heart cuz it is beautifull!

First off , kick ick and the rest of those ich products are pretty much useless imo. I would suggest setting up a decent sized QT tank, let it cycle and mature then add a couple of fish to it. You can either use the 3 day transfer method or maybe even the hyposalinity method(I am not a fan of hypo) to rid your fish of ich. Time in Qt allows you to also treat for worm's, parasites or other diseases as well as providing a stress free environment where you can fatten up your new arrival's. Still curious about your acclimation procedure with your new arrivals. Please note that a scooter blennie and mandarin goby are both competing for the the same food source(pod's) in your tank...which imo is too new to sustain both of these. Good luck and go over this for more info on ich. viewtopic.php?f=47&t=26171
