uv sterlizers

Do uv sterlizers also kill your pods and micro fauna? I know they kill parasites like ick. The reason I ask is because I used to see alot of these little buggers at night but now that I have a uv I am not seeing as many

:? :x  I am just sick about this!!! Why don't the lfs tell you these things. I bought one because they said I needed one. What is the best way to replenish your pods?

You can leave it running 24/7 I know a few members that do that....only what gets sucked into the chamber gets zapped..

I ran a uv 24x7 for years with no problem. I didnt notice a problem with pods. My fish were healthy as well as the mandarine who's diet consisted mostly of pods. I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's definately not needed but it's nice to have just in case.. Some people say the water is clearer when using a UV. I personally didn't notice much of a difference..

If you are just circulating the water through the tank and/or wet/dry sump, the only pods that might be killed are those that are free floating/swimming and that is not very likely. If you have a refugium and are UV'ing the water from it and returning it to the tank, you might be killing them there too (if the pump didn't) on their way back to the tank. The UV itself is only effective against organisms/algae that actually pass through the unit,... it does not do anything to the water that would residually kill pods. I have UV on all our tanks and even ozone on some and I don't believe it has changed the population at all. Depending on how much food they get and how much predation (by your fish) is going on, you may well see a fluctuation in the pod population. JMO
