UV Question

I was planning on installing a UV on my 65 gallon tank. The question is can i plumb in the UV after the return pump. Or does the UV need another pump to run it?

Thanks

Joshua,

The UV will be fine inline with the return depending on the flow rate of the pump and the UV. The UV manufacturer usually specifies how fast water can flow through their unit for salt water and fresh water and whether you are wanting to just kill algae in the water or you are using it for disinfection purposes. I run 2 of mine inline due to the match with speed and flow. On another tank where I have the pump pushing water too fast, I just 'T' off some of the flow from the pump output and pass it back to the refugium/sump. The downside is that not ALL the water now passes through the UV each time it passes through the sump. It was just too expensive to buy the bigger unit, esp if you are splitting the pump return into 2 lines going back to the tank. Check your specs and go with it....HTH

Each of the manufacturers seem to specify their sizes a bit different. I personally use 25w units on both a 55g and 75g and will be using a 57w on a 215g sometime (aftre I transfer another tank). Since you haven't stated what type you have or are considering, I can only say that the 25w units would be more than sufficient for a 65. I think some 18w units might even be OK. I prefer to 'over-UV' the water as I don't change bulbs very often and if they decline they should still be good for some longer period if I've used one larger than I need. There are disadvantages too, but it's just my preference.

Ok guys and gals I went ahead and brought a UV. Let me know if this is big enough for my 65.
