UV or not

I am thinking about adding a UV to my 150 and would like some opinions. I know the facts so I just want to know what you guys would do. I have the tank how I want it and dont plan on adding anything else for awhile. I have a LOT of softies and LPS together. I dont really know if they are nuking each other or not but I have my suspitions. How many people run UVs 24/7? I also have some red slime algae in the sump that I would like to murder.

What do you think?

I have a UV running 24/7 on my 150 gallon. I have softies, lps and a lot of fish. I bought it mainly to help with parasites. Everytime I added a new coral my fish would break out in a couple of spots of ich. Now that I think about it I have not seen any ich since I added the UV.

As far as algae I never had much of a problem with it so I couldn't tell a difference.

UV only kills what passes through it, so the cyno on the sand isn't going to be effected.

I've never been a big fan of UV, IME the bulbs are expensive and require replacement every 6 months, and it only kills what it comes in contact with. That means and pods etc that go through it are dead, and also means any parasites or things that do not go through it are uneffected.

Its sole purpose is pretty much for free floating parasites IMO, I can't think of much else it would be used for.

I would go ozone before I'd go UV, ozone gives other beneficial side effects.

In the mid 70s I used UV 24/7. As long as the unit was working, no ich. If anything stopped the UV from working there was Always an immediate and usually heavy ich outbreak. I quit using them in the late 70s and have never used them since.
IMO it also kills alot of things in the water column that you do not really want to kill. I had an old ozone generator someone gave me I think I might have chunked it but if I run across it again I might try it. I afraid it may have the same effect though.

Pretty much, Ozone has a few added benefits to water quality and clarity though which is a nice bonus. Neither are sure fire ways to be ich free.
