Upgrading tanks...how do you go about it?

I see a lot of reefers upgrade their tanks after a while and I'd like to do the same. I have a 30 gallon seahorse setup and would like to upgrade to a bigger tank. How do you go about the logistics. I know the obvious, buy a tank LOL but after that how do you get your existing livestock, rock, and sand transferred. And my biggest issue is that I want to put the new tank in the place where the old tank is.

I'm thinking I'd have to set up a couple of qt tanks for the livestock while I move the rock and sand. I have 6 seahorrses, 1 firefish and miscellaneous soft corals - what could I hold them in until the new tank had cycled (I'm thinking the cycle would be very short since it's just a transfer). Would a large rubbermaid container work for a short while? I really don't want to go out and buy yet another tank.

All suggestions welcome.

here is how i would do it, but there is many diff. ways to do it. i would have 2 rubber maids ready for fish in one and LR in the other. i would only keep alittle of the sand to seed the next tank.

i would keep as much of the old water as i can, and have the new water allready made up.

i would throw old sand away, and move new tank into spot.

put LR back in tankplus the water from the LR....then i would acclimate the seahorse to temp and water salinity....then i would put them in the tank along with the water they were swimming in.

basically it would be like a big water change with new sand....also the little bit of sand you kept from the old tank would be used to seed the new tank.

hope this helps...if you read the newsletter...Marc wrote a nice article about moving tanks
