Upgrading from a 40 to 90 gal RR -A few questions

I,m going to upgrade my tank in about a mo. My 40 has been up about a year and is doing great but I need more room :D I plan on using just the live rock in the tank now initially along with half new DSB and the rest the DSB I have now after saving some for seeding and cleaning the rest. Will this tank need to cycle again ? What other problems may I face? I plan on changing over in one day :?

There will be a classic cycle as the new substrate and other parts of the tank interior are inhabited by bacteria. If you keep your bioload the same it shouldn't be dramatic but each increase in life will come with a cycle to follow.

I don't plan on increasing live rock or livestock just transfering what I have at present until tank is established again :) Will the tank be safe for the present livestock initially without waiting for a cycle?

I think you can expect a cycle.

One thing you are cleaning sand which is cleaning out some of the established bio diversity of course you need to. Although it helped and carried a load it also held toxins.

Also you have live rock that will help carry but not that much live rock. So it will have more load on it because of the sand change.

If you keep you live stock the same you should be ok. But you will see a cycle of some type and size.

Water changes will help but you have to keep an eye on it.
Not sure what type of live stock you have ..fish only vrs corals.

You can cause damage to corals with a cycle but again if you control it you should be ok.

When I upgraded to my 100 I had a cycle too. And I have lots of live rock sand and I even have canister filter on top of the sump/refuge I have.

be ready for the worst with plenty of salt and water on hand and if it happens you will be ready . and if it does not then you are still safe.

Thanks guys, I have about 80plus lbs of live rock in the tank. Most of my corals are softies with a few hard corals . Six small fish and a few inverts, snails etc. Definetly won't be a big bio load for the 90.

Good luck , I have a 45g that is fillin in very nice but quick. Been looking into a 90g corner with overflows built in. let us know how your progress is when you get started..
