Unhappy clam...

[Calling all clam experts...

I have had a clam for a little over a week now. He was doing very well for the first week. Now I notice that he's spending a lot of time more closed...with his mantle pulled back. I don't have anyone really picking ON him, but my blenny has been eating little bits off of his shell, which he doesn't seem to like much. Should I be concerned? Any tips?

He's under 500watts of MH, in the center of the tank. He's over 4" big, and like I said, was doing really well for the first week.

Please help me make him a happy clam again... :sniffle:]

[Well, when something is unhappy the first step is a good battery of water tests.

In this case, I would check calcium, alkalinity, pH, nitrates, temp and SG and post them here.

Also, be sure to inspect the clam very carefully for tiny parasitic snails.

What fish do you have in your tank?

[Is he on the sandbed? What type of sand is he on, if he is on the sand? If he is on the rock, how high is he? Do you know what your calcium reading is? And do you supplement calcium? And hopefully you do not see any small snails up around his mantle, you may to check at night with the light outs.]

[Just a thought....blennies pick on anything new. Once the "newness" has worn off, or all of the algae on the outside of the clam is gone, the blenny should leave the clam alone. Once the fish stop knocking on the shell, the clam may decide to come out :D
But, I don't have a clam, so just an idea.]
