Ughh another icecap 660 blown

I have had 3 of these go now. I need to send them in for repairs I guess.
Maybe these should be on a surge protector? Could it be the timer causing the ballast failure?
Anbody got one for sale or lend to me till I get mine back from repairs. I hate to keep buying these. they should last longer than 1 year I would think. This last one I bought from DNA - it was a refurbished unit.

How long can my poor corals go in darkness? I've got Softies and LPS and a couple hardy SPS.

If anybody has a loaner light I could use (rent!) I've got some corals I can frag for you.

edit - My endcaps are fairly new, not corroded. The first two ballasts seemed to overheat and smelled like they were on fire. This one yesterday if plugged in lights for about 2 seconds and goes off.
I'm going to call Icecap tomorrow.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi,
These are things you can check until you get ahold of icecap. There is also a continuity check that requires a multimeter which can be bought for ~$15.

Thanks Bimmerz. I will check those items tonight when I get home.

Kuhumar is going to lend me one too if still neccessary, so I looking good now.

I had the same issue a week or so ago.

Icecaps shut off after two seconds if the ballast detects an open circuit. That's the case if one of the wires is loose, broken, or not correctly seated in the end cap. More commonly the issue is that the lamp prongs aren't making good contact with the metal flanges in the endcap. Check all of that first before you spend any money.

FYI: I picked up a used 660 at Neptune's Cove for around $80. Bill is a sponsor here, send him a PM to see if he has any more.
