Types of overflow for side drilled tanks??

I can only think of two (remember, this is for side drilled tanks!)

1) 90 degree elbow
2) regular overflow box

but both of these are internal overflows. Is there any way to build like a PVC exterior contraption? I was thinking of a pipe going up from the side to the highest level that you want your water to be then making a 180 degree turn to go back down. ??

What other types of overflows do people use with side drilled tanks?

if your holes are half way up on a side of a tank. just get a half size overflow box

If you have holes up high on the back wall or side wall, you can run an external Durso. Take a look at the pictures on this page, about midway down:
