Two Spot Hogfish

I was wanting to get this fish as the last fish for my tank. Does anyone have any opinions, good or bad, about this fish? I can't find too much info on them.

Only info I have found is I can get them in the 1"-2" size. They will get a maximum of 4" in the wild. They might eat shrimp when they get older. They are reef safe. They are technically in the Wrasse family.

Currently I have: 2 Ocellaris Clownfish, 1 Starry Blenny, and 1 Yashia Shrimp Goby.

Frank just called me. Said he just received my Two Spot Hogfish. Will be picking up tonight around 9:30pm. I'm so excited, I can't wait. Pics won't be too far behind.

The only other place I've seen this fish is in Rift2Reefs Show Tank so I'll keep you informed of how it's doing.

Well, I got him home and acclimated. No one payed attention to him till he got near one of the starry blenny's prized perching rocks. So a chase began, boy is he fast! He's been put in the corner, but I did get a shot of him in the bag.

He's about 2" long. Thanks Frank!

Anyone know how long he might hide for? Haven't even seen a glimpse of him. He's so slender he can swim into some of my LR and disappear.

I tried the Cyclop-eeze trick Marc told me about that I used to entice my Yashia Goby and the Hogfish came out of his hole a little. At least I know which hole is his now.

One thing I noticed with this fish verses any others I've seen is that their eyes move independently from one another, much like a Chamelion which is totally cool!

Be patient they are very shy at first but will get bold after awhile. I know a couple of people that said they eventually got aggressive and killed other fish. Sorry I should have posted that earlier but I wasn't sure which hog you were talking about.

Thanks Nicki! I'll have to keep an eye on him. After the Cyclopeeze he's been in and out of hiding. My Starry Blenny is being a bully right now. He doesn't understand that the Hog wants INSIDE his rock, not on it, lol. And allegedly ALL my LR belong to George and he's apparently not the sharing type. We'll have to see how it goes.

I haven't read about them bothering other fish, but have read they might eat small crustaceans when they get bigger. Technically, he's in the Wrasse family.

He's super quick. Moves effortlessly. Took me 60 pics to get one decent shot of him.

Do some searching on reef central. Some people say they are aggressive others have no problem with them. I had thought about getting one at one time.

Another name for them is candy hog.

I can tell you that in the wild, small Hogfish of all types are very aggressive. The huge ones seem to not care much about anything, but I watched a small Spanish Hogfish fight a small Wrasse to the death while on a dive last week.

Thanks for the replies. He's doing great. He reminds me of a humming bird the way he "hovers" while his fins are moving at light speed. All he does all day long is swim and eat then as soon as light go out he goes to sleep, lol. What a life...
