Two part dosing or calcium reactor

If you were designing a sps only system, would you choose a ca reactor or dosing with a dosing pump like profilux?? Tank volume is around fifty gallons

That small of tank a reactor is overkill they do make small ca reactors for small tanks Geo and I think aquamaxx do.

I would go with dosing pumps and do bionic that small of a tank bionic would last quite along time.

With your kids and practice bionic is
Premade all you need to do is clean the tank and test twice a week

i dose two part once an hour with a bubble magus, on a 50 gallon tank it would be a great way to do it.

Well at some point this tank will be grown in with sps ... I have dosed with dosing pumps and was frustrated with the inconsistency in the dosing ... Tubes coming loose etc ... But that could have been the setup ... What is the knock on the calcium reactor

Alk could be hard to keep under control with a large reactor until your sps start to really grow. You could just set your controller on a timer to run only half the day. Or buy a really small one. Check out pico jet stream or k2r. I don't think your gonna have a problem. My cr140d reactor is rated over 400 gallons on my 90. So far my Alk is stable

what brand reactor is the cr140d?

Reef octopus. Its too big for yours by far. So big it wont even fit in my stand and Im going to put it in a kitchen cabinet and run the hoses

Reactor. Not as popular these days but 24/7 addition is IMO better than dosing 3-4 times a day said:
Curious why would limit to 3-4x daily? I run mine 24x a day, e.g. once an hour. could do more often, but run calcium offset by 30 minutes with alk.

Sounds like someone giving advice without actually using a doser. [smilie=smile.gif] Rating on most aquarium equipment is irrevelent, your tank's consumption dictates the needed size/capacity of many component's used on our tank's. I had a CaRx rated for a 400G system but it could no longer keep up with the demand's on a 130G system with over 90% sps. You can tune a CaRx to any varied tank demand's so a larger unit is desirable over a smaller unit. Biggest issue for me was the effuent line clogging on my CaRx and the need to retune each month which is problematic with my travel for work. I would dose up my level's and retune the reactor to maintain the new levels so it would not be too low after being gone for a few months.

Cheers,

that is a good point Ron ...

on the dosing pump setup ... what is everyone using to store their liquids in ... custom containers, jugs etc?

I use 2.5g jugs (from BRS), but am about to have Marc build me an acrylic multi-purpose box that I will use (Alk/Ca/Mg/SW/RO).

I have not done it yet Gerard but in the process too but instead of running a valve on the effluent line which causes most clogging is that you remove the ball valve and use a dial able speed peristaltic pump if you decide to go ca reactor

In theory if you have no phosphates or nitrates you won't need to do water changes to replace trace minerals sps needs while 2 part replaces it with either dosing the minerals or water changes

If you are gonna use a peristaltic pump to precisely feed the CaRx, you may as well use the peristaltic pump to precisely dose your tank. [smilie=lol.gif] Most peristaltic pumps are not designed to run continuously and will overheat and shutdown, which could lead to a sporadic output from the reactor. Without a constant steady input pressure, it will be almost impossible to ensure a consistent drip rate. I see no way around having some kind of valve for the effluent output. Just something to keep in mind.
