Tunze wavebox

Got my Tunze wavebox in yesterday and after a bit of tinkering have it up and generating about a 35 mm wave in my tank. Very very cool. It plus the two Tunze streams have taken my flow in the tank from something like 10x to more like 50x. The SPS loved the streams, so I cant wait to see the reaction to the wavebox. And the claim is that the wave action penetrates every inch of the aquarium, so no more deadspots and all detritus goes into suspension where my skimmer can remove it.

Only aggravation so far is a tendency on one corner to disturb the sand bottom. I may just put a big rock there and force some of the sand to stay in place.

No prying. I have never seen them discounted. Same price everywhere. I got mine from Champion but lots of online vendors cary them although they are often back ordered. $504.35

Ouch! That's a lot of MJ1200's!!! I know, not the same, but sheesh!

Someone needs to figure out how to knock those off!

Like I said the other day, I am aspiring to be just like you! I want someday growth and coloration just like Peterlin.

Thanks for kind words

MJs can not compete. The flow is gentle just like a Tunze stream. No flesh tearing off jet, like what you see with nearly every powerhead.

I think Peterlin has his all linked together. That is his multicontroller runs his four streams and his wavebox. I have not yet tied mine in. I will likely put the light sensor on today so that the wave drops down when the lights go off, just like the ocean.

There is a way to calculate the flow of a wavebox. Let me see if I can find it.

Ok it matters on how long and how wide your tank is, and how much obstruction to the wave your rock and coral create. On a 5 ft long tank that is 2 feet wide and you get a 1/2 inch wave you should generate between about 2600 and 3300 GPH. If you get a 1 inch wave you could get up to 5000 GPH. Lots of water movement and since it goes in two directions it flushes detritus out of trapped places.

Have you seen a wavebox? I have never seen anything else create what this device does. If you want to see mine just holler. I would be happy to let you see it. And if you have seen what Peterlin does with his corals.... The growth is phenomenal and the colors are always popping on his tank. He would tell you he thinks the wavebox is a big reason for his success.

Id love to check it out sometime. Have you ever seen the wave2k in action? From what i hear they are pretty equal in performance.

Sort of. My wavemaker is mounted on the back of the tank so as it pulls water in the top, it pushes it out the bottom and vice versa. In my 120, I really dont even need powerheads but threw in some seio's anyway. It causes a natural wave action on the top and bottom of the tank. My only coral  (is a kenya tree frag that a member gave me at the meeting) is in the front center of the tank and waves back and forth in the reciprocating current.

I have seen both in action and a Wave 2k does not compete. They use totally different concepts. Not that a Wave2k is not a good product but it is meant to vary the flow by turning one direction then another in a set time frame. The wavebox on the other hand is uses pulses to create a real wave in the tank using resonant frequencies in the tank! An actual back and forth swaying. No other product does this. They are really amazing when you see them in action.

In my opinion waveboxes really aren't about the GPH. It's about the incredible natural and suspending action it creates! If you ever see one and the detritus that lifts off the bottom and the incredible polyp extension with them you will be convinced. If you don't have the money (or the room to make a couple inch wave) in your tank or if you don't have SPS then it may not be worth it but let me tell you after seeing Peter's and then several others I was more then convinced this is the absolute best product out there for an SPS tank.

Gary - thank you for the kind words. I believe in good equipments - afterall they are only a fraction of what we investement in this hobby.

Keith - I think flow/wavebox plays an important role. I have seen some nice setup in our area - with similar equipments. Joe thinks that my sps colorup faster is probably because of the wavebox and the overall flow. Otherwise he has a HQI light now - and we still see some differences in color of same corals.

When I first got my wavebox, I installed it in my 211 gallon (which don't have any more). Some of you may remember that I had that tank for LPS like frogspawn, torth, leather. My limited experience (wavebox was in that tank for a week or two) is that LPS don't like too much water movement. I agree that wavebox does wonder if you want to setup a sps dominant tank.

For the growth of sps, I am not sure there is any better product on the market that the TUnze Wavebox. And I am not saying because I have one. And I know they are not for everyone, it is huge cost. But then again I do not own a 50" HDTV, it is all a choice. But I do know the sps respond very positively to the back and forth wave action. Sps photosynthesize 30% more under the same amount of light with flow versus no flow. And the great thing about the wavebox, every area of the tank has some of the wave action going over it.

Great!!! I thought I had the flow all planned out in the new 120 in wall. 6 outlets, oceansmotins 4 way and a dart. Now I am not so sure, do you think a wave box and just return flow from the sump would be enough for a sps dominated 120. Thanks for opening my eyes, I think I got a little too focused on the closed loop and did not think it all the way through.
