tunze skimmers

I've been trying to look around for another skimmer. I currently have an ASM G2 and am thinking about upgrading to something different. My skimmer doesn't seem to be consistent with the output. Most of the time all the gunk builds up in the neck and not much skimmate actually collects in the cup after a couple of days. I'm curious to see if anybody here has the tunze skimmers such as the 9005/9010 and if you like the way it performs. I've looked on RC in the tunze forum but they may be somewhat biased.

I would love to have one of their new skimmers that's coming out but the footprint is way too big.

If all else fails I may try a deltec or h&s.

let me know what you guys think.

John, I was just about to suggest waiting for the new skimmers to come out, but it seems like you have already looked at the foot prints.

I'm in the same boat as you with the skimmer upgrade, I think that I might be upgrading to one of the new tunze in the future. I like the ASM, but I think that I could be getting more out of my skimmer.

Do you want to stay with a needlewheel skimmer or try a different type of skimmer?

I've heard nothing but good things about the deltecs.

Yeah I really wish I could fit the new tunze in there. The foot print that I have to play with is about 14x11. I just don't know if I want to drop 600+ on a Deltec AP600 or 800+ for the APF600.

Do you know the footprints of the new tunze skimmers? Can you run it externally? Chris said:
The diameter is 480mm which is a little under 19" and it is for in sump use only.

I actually own 3 Tunze skimmers. They all work well (though one is my spare now). I'd recommend the 9010 for sump use, it's solid. Though I clean the necks daily in all skimmers because it improves performance a great deal.

And the prize on those big new tunze needlewheels is high. All 900-1200 btw.

Can you take a pic of the skimmate you get and is it consistent in the amount it pulls?

John, it sounds like you just need to clean your skimmer's neck more often, and raise the water level another 1/4" in the body to get the right skimmate with what you have now.

Right now I'm feeding all the water from the overflow into the skimmer and am guesstimating that it is around 3-400 GPH through it. I might try splitting the overflow so I can control how much water is going into the skimmer. Has anybody tried this?

I'll take a photo of one of the cups sometimes this weekend. I skim mildly wet and 1/2 fill the cup everyday. On Tunzes the neck/cup are one pieces, so when I empty the cup I also clean the neck. If I don't do this daily it collects skimmate at a slower rate.
