I was at Mid-Cities Aquariums yesterday and a super helpful employee was showing me the Tunze waveboxes. She suggested that I only needed a Nano Wavebox on my 120 gallon tank, but I was not convinced because it simply seemed strange to run "nano" equipment on a 120 gallon tank. I did however appreciate the price difference between the standard wavebox and nano wavebox. I went home and researched a bit and found that she was right. After speaking with JBSmurf and looking through various posts it became clear that the nano was the right choice. I pulled the trigger and got it.
JBSmurf came by and helped me install it. When we first turned it on I started adjusting the Pulse setting and looking for the wave to become apparent. While neither of us said it out loud at the time, I don't think JBSmurf or I were particularly impressed with the wave that was being produced. We kept making very fine adjustments to the pulse setting in hopes the wave would become something more to speak about other than, "You think that's it?" Before we installed the wavebox we both read through the manual and it mentioned a voltage setting on the power supply, but I honestly didn't understand the why, when, where, how, who behind changing the voltage setting. It has a switch that allows the output voltage to be set to 12v, 15v, 18v, 20v, 22v, or 24v. It was set to 12v out of the box. Combined with the fact that we weren't seeing much wave action and that the voltage setting was the only other knob to turn, I did a quick Google search to see what others had to say about it. Didn't find much, but did find a post where someone said they weren't getting much of a wave and someone responded with, "Did you try turning the voltage up?" So we cranked the voltage up to 24v. After a little tinkering with the pulse setting, we now had a very definite wave. This nano wavebox is now making a wave strong enough to make the fish dance back and forth.
Anyone have experience with the Nano Wavebox on tank of approximately 120 gallons, give or take? What voltage setting did you find to provide the right wave? Can you have too much wave as long as the water is not splashing out of the tank? This morning my wife was looking at the tank and said, "Don't you think you should turn it down some? Shouldn't the wave be a bit more gentle vs the turbulant wave that you have currently?" I am from the school of thought that bigger is better, let's put a V8 engine on it and see what it can do then! Sorry for the long post... Thoughts?
