Well, just basically, I see alot of plumbing on here where there are valves.

1)What are those pieces with the valves used for?

2)And, such a newbie type question, but you just place the pvc pipe down into the sump starting at the skimmer section?

3)If my sump isn't drilled, I just place the pipe straight in it?

Some people (including me) build a bubble tower in the skimmer section that allows you to run your drain into with some LR rubble to break up some bubbles. There are teeth cut at the bottom of the bubble tower that allow the water to flow thru and into the sump.

You should be able to do a search for plumbing and get lots of results.

This valve serves two purposes. One: to close off if I have to change the pump and prevents water from siphoning from the tank when I disconnect it. Two: it regulates the water flow to my skimmer. Reef devils are pretty touchy and you have to get the water just right.

The pipe on the left is the return from the tank and goes down then across under the live rock and terminates under the skimmer. The pipe on the right does the same thing and terminates under the skimmer. It is my feed line for the skimmer, water comes from the skimmer and flows out on top of the live rock. So in short, underneath my skimmer is where my tank water goes, I then pull from that spot up into my skimmer, and then drop the skimmed water on top of the live rock. By doing this I give an area for my skimmer pump and my return pump to sinc up and prevents any dead spots in my sump area.

Here is all my plumbing being glued together.

Here it is under the tank

This is the reason why I have valves, notice there is water inside the overflow yet its not coming out.

I wont be saying that when I have to clean a pump, or move a drain line! In fact, I've already found a place I wish I had a ball valve that I don't!

Ya spaflex rocks. I wonder why people don't use it around the house more. I think I paid about $1 a foot online, and saw it at HD for $2.50. Still not to bad.

there are some nice looking plumbing jobs posted above

here is a diagram of my setup

I don't have valves in the overflow drain lines - they not needed when you have overflows. there is a valve on the drain line to the fuge to control the amount of flow

I have valves around the pump for maintenance ans isolating the return lines

and the closed loop has valves to isolate the pump or a potential leak

and by the way I'm not a fan of spa flex for drains, it's okay for returns, but the sags in horizonal drain runs will create more turbulence then an elbow or two you may eliminate

lite blue is drain lines
dark blue is return lines
yellow is closed loop

hope it helps
