Trying the Hobby out again

Hi all, decided to give reef aquariums another go, used to have a 40 breeder setup about 5 years ago, was alot of fun but work made it really hard to keep up with and my tank started looking kinda on the crappy side so I had to get out. So I got a new job and moved into a new house and had an 80 gallon sitting out in the shed and started getting it setup, started out with looking for lights and found a set of T5 4x54 from Odyssea, (im sure thats going to be very unpopular but for 100 bucks shipped I thought it was worth a try until I can afford a couple of clamp on or wall mounted metal halides which is what I was thinking about doing next year sometime. I also ran a CPR backpack in my 40 and I found it to be a very tempermental piece of equipment but after some research I decided I was gonna go with a Eshopps PSK-100 series, saw some really good video on these and I was pretty impressed with the functionality of it and again very affordable, anyways, glad to be back on here reading again, also looking for sand, I have some crushed coral type but was hoping to find something like Southdown that I ran before, was a really nice sand but looks to be all out of business now unfortunately, if anyone has some tips on where to find good sand that isnt 30 bucks a bag, lemme know [smilie=wink.gif]

I had an Eshopps skimmer and at the time it was horrible. They may have corrected the problem but the one I had was a design nightmare. When hanging on the side of their own sump the pickup tube would not reach the water. When I put extensions on it to get it into the water the pump was not strong enough to prime the pump and the only way to get it going was to give it an enima with a mag7 shooting up the pickup. HORRIBLE design. If you're hanging it on the side of a tank you may not have these problems as the water level will be higher. Just something to think about.

I checked into the southdown sand a while back. According to the manufacturer they do not distribute to Texas anymore. They only service the East coast. Your best bet is the forums for cheap sand.

Welcome back to the fold!!!

Thx for the input everyone, been awhile since I checked my post on here, im pretty far past that now, I rinsed my old sand I had stored from a Cichlid tank I had been running previously and it turned out pretty nice, the Eshopps skimmer is running pretty good, its actually going to town with just 2 damsels running around in the tank, and im just feeding every 3 days, I was pretty susrprised I was getting some skimate out of that, I'll try and throw some pictures in here once im done. I just ordered my power heads and 100 pounds of dry fiji rock from BRS, hoping thats here next week so I can get started on some aquascaping, im getting the reefing bug bad the further I get along here. Thinking about getting a membership here but I keep talking myself out of it as I live about 140 miles south of Dallas but Ive always read the forums on here, but I like to take a trip to Dallas a few times a year so...I dunno, lol

very cool, maria wants your glass fish! lol

are you gonna make it out saturday? this event should be a great help and while you are a ways away it is an all day deal so would be plenty worth it!

lol, Yeah, the glass fish was pretty cool, figured that glass would look cool under all that lighting and offer a little shelter for my damsels, my domino is a bit of a bully and it calmed him down quite a bit, as to this saturday, I honestly had not thought about it till now, I dont have a massive amout of money at the moment to buy corals but thats just an awesme thought, I might just go, Is there still time to get tickets for just the vendor hall and such?

well, broke down and just sent in for membership since ive decided to make the trip saturday, works in perfectly with my days off schedule so i'll see ya there [smilie=smile.gif]

can anyone give me a good recomendation on where to pick up a little live rock near the Wave, I need a few pounds to seed my tank with and figured this would be a good opportunity for me to pick it up while im in the area

id say fish2morow or the true percula would be your best bets. you can see them all here

welcome as a member by the way! i got you set up with your fancy new orange fish!

thanks Wes, was looking at fish2morrow on the map and checking it out, I had seen reference to it before on another post somewhere and it had some really good feedback

Welcome back, the reef bug spreads fast!

I'm about to break down my 72g tank and move everything over to my 120 now that it appears it has finished it's cycle. I'll be heading to next wave tomorrow, and have plenty of live rock I'm going to be selling for $2.50ish a pound if you are interested. Shoot me a PM with your e-mail or a number I can text pictures to if you are interested.
