trouble with a sump idea

I want to connect my wet/dry to my homemade refugium. i elevated the the wet/dry and was counting on the syphon to transfer the water smoothly like a overflow box. Well I am trying 1 1/4" pvc pipe and two elbows to make the U tube. My pump sucks dry. i added another of the same tube set up. still not fast enough. Do i need to use more or skinnier tube and more, or wider tube and less,or is it the squareness of the set up that is giving me the resistance? I am looking for sugestions. i hooked up the components seperately and they both work fine with the pump and the rate of flow. therefore it must be a syphon transfer problem. suggestions please. You need both sides to have the right water height at all times. They can not vary, or you'll have a flood on your hands or a burned up motor.

What sized return pump are you trying to run? A 1" U tube should handle 600gph. Maybe you should consider buying a real U tube rather than fabricating one, as then you can see if it is holding the siphon or if you have a lot of trapped air slowing down the flow.

i am running a rio 3100 at 3 1/2ft of head weight. this should be moving at about 750-800 i think. I would like to try a real U tube but I have not seen U tubes that are longer like 12 inches long. thanks for your reply. I really like your sump designs. I am having fun with this one. YUKI

If that wet/dry is acrylic, then I would really consider about drilling a hole near the top and putting in a bulkhead. Then run some PVC over to the refugium area.

I don't know how many GPH that pump moves.

What you might do is take a real U tube, and slip on some flexible hose on each end to make the tube longer.

The hole towards the top will not move 600 gph. unless it is very big. i have a 3/4" bulk head in mine and with out a siphon it will only move about 200 gph max. if you use a siphon make sure you have safe guards or preparded for what marc said, floods or burnt motor.
