Tropic Marin Pro-Reef.. 16dkh?!??!

Just bought some Tropic Marine Pro-Reef..

This stuff is mixing to..

salinity 1.025
16dkh alk
480 calcium
ph 7.8

This is the readings about 30 mins after mixing it...

Does this seem right??

I tested it with 2 different kits. Including Salifert.

Should PH go up after leaving it for awhile? Is 16dkh too high?

what is the dKH of your tap water? it can only go that high + what the salt adds.

I use that same salt and it raises my pure RO water (0 TDS) to 8dKH. So if you have 8dKH tap water, then your RO water wasn't RO

My tap water in Irving is only 2dKH though so would be hard to notice. Try to find someone close by with a TDS reader to make sure that RO was good.

I also have my salinity at 1.025, so if not the water source, then it is your testkits (wouldn't think both could be wrong though).

also, my calcium didn't go that high with that salt... only to 400ppm.

Well it was my RO water.. MAN WTF!!!!!!!!!

That pisses me off... It was at a place called "The watering barrel"

I compared the calcium and dkh of tap here in town vs. the RO water I was paying 25c a gallon for.

They are exactly the same!!!!!!! 8dkh

I went around to 5 other RO places and they all tested good. Looks like 0 DKH.

To think I have been paying to put tap water in my reef tank (without declorinating it might I add) makes me sick.

Daniel - Not trying to preach, but I highly agree with Matt... A decent RO/DI system can be had from ePay in the $100 range... And then you'll have complete control over your water...

(Of course, then when things go bad you have no one to blame but yourself, says the guy who'd neglected his filters for so long that his output water was 100+ TDS this morning. Ugh. (And yeah, replaced sediment, carbon block and DI, back down to 0 TDS product water now))

Man, I gotta echo what the other fellas have said here....especially since you live so far out (Stephenville). Even if you live close to the facility where you purchase water, for me it was just easier to buy an RO/DI unit, a TDS meter, and be done with it. After the intial cost upfront, you'll kick yourself everytime you go get a jug of water out of your house for not doing it sooner. Possibly the most important item a person can have when it comes to having a Marine system.......in my opinion.

says the guy who'd neglected his filters for so long that his output water was 100+ TDS this morning. Ugh. (And yeah said:
WOW....... .........And I felt like a neglectful parent when I let mine go for 2 years and I was getting 10PPM...... :?

Daniel - There are occasional group buys for inline TDS meters for the $20 range, you can usually find one on your own (Either in-line or a dip type) for under $50 though...

The RO/DI has many different cartridges, that are used up at varying rates depending on the exact filters, and your source water. For example, my system has 4 filters:

Sediment
Carbon Block
Reverse Osmosis
Deionization

The sediment filters take out the fine silt, and mine last about 3-4 months, but I have HORRIBLE source water.

The Carbon Block de-chlorinates the water, and I believe those are usually good for around 6 months.

The Reverse Osmosis is the most expensive part of the system, but is usually good for 3-5 years.

The deionization is usually good for 6 months or so, but I'm burning 'em up at the rate of around 1 a month, like I said, my source water is horrid...

Ball park prices I'm pulling outta the air, sediment $5, Carbon Block $10, RO $75-$100 and DI $30 (Unless you get refillable and buy bulk media, then they're around $10 per fill up)

I bought a TDS meter and went back to that place to test it....

300 TDS.. man I should turn these guys in... I see old people paying money there and it makes me sick.

NOTE: This is a month later..... It's been like thise for who knows how long.

I wish I could use a RO unit, but I cannot just tap into the copper here. I live in an apartment.

We have a sponsor on this forum (Water Provisions to Go). Talk to Lawrence, who just happens to be on the State Board about that particular business. I would suspect an inspection is due.

I had another water place tell me that they are supposed to keep it under a certain TDS.. like 10 or so? Or they couldn't sell it as "pure" water.

Yep, he's a good guy, and very thourough when it comes to doing inspections. He's told me of a couple of places around the area that are just horrindous in their practices.
