Tropic Marin...Mixing Ratio ??

I will be making my own salt water soon and have purchased a 5 gallon bucket of Tropic Marin. But, I'll be damned if it does NOT tell you ANYWHERE on the bucket on how much to mix! I know this stuff is made in Germany, and I have used it for a long time (which I bought), but would like to know how much to add to 5 gallons of water for example.

I will be storing 100 gallons of salt water, but once again I do NOT know the proper mixture and can NOT find it anywhere.

If anyone knows, please let me know. Thanks.

it varies of course based on the salinity you are wanting...i think for like 40G I usualy have to use 5-6 red dixie cups full..i think....i should really count and measure but, i usually just add some wait for it to mix test it add a little more till i reach the salinity level i want.

Thanks for that. I HAVE to believe, though, there HAS to be a 'close' mix for your reef tank...like 1 cup for 5 gallons of ro/di water. 6 ounces per cup....something....

wxman,

I just mixed some up last week for the first time (Tropic Marin Pro-Reef). I haven't gotten it down just yet, but figure approximately 1.5 cups for 5 gallons. That should put you in the ballpark of 1.023-1.025.

Thanks, I appreciate that. I was figuring 1 cup per 5 gallons. BUT, if you were mixing about 1 1/2 cups, I'll go with that...especially with the SG you gave me. I'll probably start with 1 cup per 5 gallons, then measure. Add 1/4 cup, then measure....and finally, if necessary, get to 1 1/2 cups, then measure.

You should, obviously, only have to do this once, then you'll know.

Thanks again for your results.

I use Tropic Marin pro reef, now I normally have to use about 2 cups of salt for 5 gallons of water to get 1.025.

Hi,
Hopefully you are using a refractometer with ATC(auto temp correction). If using a hydrometer you may or may not be getting accurate data. I always thought mixing up a litle SW was simple until I read this article. http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/jan2002/chemistry.htm

Yea, this is a little more than I really expected! I have contacted Tropic Marin in Germany and have left 2 e-mails to two different engineers over there, so I do expect some kind of response. I have actually e-mailed them before and they were VERY good at getting back to me....and also very friendly.

I'll let everyone know about their response regarding the mixture.

I've found that with the pro-reef, you use WAY more mix than other brands. The 32 gal box doesn't make anywhere near 32 gals, even at the lower salinity levels.

I use Regular Tropic Marin.

I usually make 5 gallons at a time and I usually use a little less than 3 cups of salt. I use a refractometer to check.

I just checked this using the following method.

The salt bucket says there is 55lbs of salt which makes 200 gallons.

55/200 = .275 lbs of salt per gallon of water.

For 5 gallons of water it is 5 x .275 = 1.375 lbs of salt.

16 ozs = 1 lb
16 x 1.375 = 22 ozs (sorry my scale measures in ounces)

3 cups of salt equals about 24 ozs which is where I get the close to 3 cups of salt.

Again this is the Regular Tropic Marin.
