Trigger Question

Okay... So I had a Niger Trigger, my dream fish, for about 3 weeks or so (when Petorama had their big sale). I had him in my main tank without qt, shame on me I know... He had these weird spots on either side that looked like someone with pale blue lipstick had kissed him a few times. Thats the only description I can think of... Well he broke out with what I believe was velvet, it came off with the first fw dip at which point I qt'd him. It came right back again, another dip, it didn't come off. The large white splotches had disappeared. He was still eating rather vigorously, hiding a lot though. Then the other day he was just dead (about 4 days qt total). Those white spots had been really noticable after his death and I've never seen anything like that before on any fish. The velvet or ich wasn't really that "bad" to the point of killing him without any noticable suffering. He never flicked or anything. I'm not really bothered by his death so much as the weird splotches on his sides. Any ideas? My other fish are absolutely perfect so I know its not really contagious. I don't have pictures, just a description. It looked to be under his skin though.

It doesn't sound like velvet to me for a couple reasons. One velvet is very very fine much smaller then Ich even so that's inconsitent with the splotches you describe. Also velvet is usually a quick killer. a couple days at most. It's also possible that there were multiple issues and velvet was one of them.

I would guess, and that's all it is without pics, that it was some kind of bacterial infection or issue. We don't know much about them and we just have to treat with broad range antibiotics like Macaryn and Macaryn-2

Well first he had those white splotches and I guessed that maybe he got wacked against the glass when the lfs tried to net him or he hit himself on a rock. Then a few days later he broke out in either ich or velvet, covered him entirely so that I couldn't see the splotches. When he died there were no more velvets or ich on him but those white splotches were really vivid.

Not Velvet. Maybe Flukes. Did you check his gills? said:
EWwwwwww... No... Something about dissecting pets just doesn't work for me. Biology class + fetal pigs = mental scarring.

Sorry. Years as a fisherman does things to you. Back then I used a fillet knife, now a single edge razor blade and a microscope. Same thing, only smaller and harder to hold on to.
