Toasted nori? - Feeding question

[OK, I know I should have asked this at the meeting last night when Marc was reviewing feeding techniques, but it did not occur to me until this morning. I have been putting a veggie clip with Nori from the fish store in my tank for a while now. I have a rabbitfish and believe it or not a trigger who love it. I noticed this morning I am almost out. I like to make sushi at home so I have some nori I got at a Japanese market, but it is toasted, not dried. So here is the question, can I put that in the tank for the fish or do I need to get dried. Thanks in advance.]

[I have the same question. Can someone advises? Which brand of Nori that I should buy at asian market? do they have different types?]

[Roasted/Toasted is what you will find.

Do not use any flavored Nori as it might be harmful.

If you scroll about 2/3rds of the way down this page this is what it looks like

Nori Package Link

Brands may vary just make sure it is plain with no flavoring!]

[thanks keith. and thank in absentia to Marc. I have to remember to spend more time looking at his website. :D

I have the exact package of nori he has pictured so I guess I am good to go.]

[The only problem with the toasted/roasted is that the heat cooks out some important nutrients.
Its fine to use it but I would alternate with some regular dried stuff too.
You could soak it in zoe before feeding as well to get some of the goodies back.]

[Which brings me to a question... Where is the best place to buy food additives and what are their names.

Garlic
Zoe (?)
Etc

Where do you buy the unroasted Nori?]

[Shucks, thanks Mike :blush21:

Tony you can get most of the stuff at your LFS.
I buy minced garlic in a jar in the produce isle and use the pure juice from that. I know many others buy the liquid tablets at the health food store, I havent found one yet without other additives so I stick with the juice. That said, I dont think any of them have any problems with it.
Or you can buck up and pay for Kents or Seachems garlic.

Zoecon and Selcon can be had at the LFS and I think the differences are subtle. Both are high in Omega 3 fats and I know selcon contains Vit C, but Im not sure about the zoecon.
Regular Zoe is a vitamin with a bunch of goodies in it, but no fats and I dont think it contains Vit C.

I admit, Im not a cheap Nori buyer. I just love the Julian Sprung varieties and so do my hippos. You can get the dried stuff at the Whole Food Store much cheaper though.]

[Forget Whole Foods :p go to the Asian market. Less than 1/2 what whole foods charges.

I do soak mine in selcon everytime before I feed. And garlic about once a week.

I buy the expensive stuff for this. A bottle of Kent garlic lasts 6 months so I don't mind paying up but have heard many people doing their own, like Amanda, with no issues. Online you can order any of this stuff (besides Nori).

Two places I buy a lot from are:
Marine Depot
Premium Aquatics

Having said that I do also buck up for the red and purple varieties of Sea Veggies. I alternate between the three (Nori and the two versions) to give my fish a good variety. Don't know that it's neccessary but it makes sense logically to me ???]

[The 2 asian markets I have been to in Haltom city only have roast. I need more this week. Keith, what asian market do you go to that has dried?]

[The one in arlington near Sherry Street / Park Row? has em for 20 sheets for $1. Many different types to choose from.

Andy]

[There is one on 303 west of 360 in Arlington. Not sure the name. Roasted is all that is there also.

I have never found any non-roasted except specifically for fish like Sea Veggies or Ocean Nutrition.]

[The one I had from Whole foods was dried and still cheap at like 3-4 bucks a bag.

Keith I think its good to alternate as well, they are all different species so surely one may offer what another one doesnt.

On a side note Marine Depot has the 30g bag for 5$ which is half what I pay for it at petco. If anyone wants to do a groupbuy of sorts on the SeaVeggies let me know and Ill throw it together.

Keith, is the red variety you buy in a flat thin sheet like the others?]

[Yep just like the others.

I'm up for some more. I need the other 2 "non-green" varieties pretty soon.]
