Toadstool question

I bought this about 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't fully opened. I was told it was a toadstool and it looks like it but it doesn't have long tentacles like most I've seen. It's every bit of 9" from point to point if not bigger. I'm also wondering if they will split themselves. About three days ago a large slit in the bottom started to appear, and as you can see in the pic it's pretty big now and going right through the middle. I have a 72g bowfront with 2 14000k daylights and 3 460 actinic. The toadstool is sitting in the middle of the tank at the bottom. Any help would be great...

It's got good flow and its not direct, when the tentacles are out they move pretty good and it doesn't seam to bother it. After a couple hours of the lights being on the slit went away and now it's a good 11" from point to point. I'm still wondering why it's not filling out all the way??

Just give it time. It is still settling in. Soon those polyps will open up and be pretty. Here's the story about mine: http://www.reefaddicts.com/content.php/122-Coral-of-the-Week-the-Toadstool-Leather

For now, I'd leave it alone. T5s are different in their light output, and it is dispersed. All you'll do by moving it up is pounding it with more intensity (PAR), so let's just see how the coral does. Mine was on the substrate, sitting on some rock under what measured less than 144 originally. When I bought better reflectors over two years ago, PAR leaped to 444 and the coral continued to thrive under that light.

My 280g sprung a leak in early July, and the tank came down. The leather didn't survive, I'm sorry to report.

That was a great read. I had seen those pictures before on your melev's reef site and had always wondered how long it took to become so big.

Thanks marc, you have a beautiful setup. I'm just wondering if my lighting is good enough? I'm only running about 250 watts t5. It does look like it is leaning over a bit. The base is 4-5 inches round, and 5 inches tall so a spot in my tank is hard to find. If and when he fully stretches out its gonna be huge! My tank is a good 24" tall..... I might try moving him tonight about half way up somewhere and see how that works.

Well the site went down before I could check my post...so it got moved. I like it a lot better, the arrangement that is! This morning the toadstool is really looking good. He is about 5" off the sand and seems to like it.

Mine was 19" diameter maybe more and about 15" tall...they get huge fast. Mine i had for 3 years and it was a monster of a coral. Finally took it out due to size. It was in a 75 gallon and previously a 30g. It wouldnt fit in a five gallon bucket. It sure was pretty though. If some debris falls onto it. The tentacles in that area wont open for awhile. My clowns loved it like a host anemone. Mine never split ever and i dont think they do on there own from my experience.
